Hello everyone, newbie here to the forum. My 2010 with 206000 miles has recently had the #1 cylinder problem and losing coolant. I'm thinking about buying a new engine for the car. I would like to buy new and not rebuilt or used. Does anyone know of a rough price for a new engine for our Gen Prius and where to purchase? TIA

No, I don't have the time for the swap and will just have the local dealership install.

If you are going to have the dealership change it I would buy it from them. If there were any problems it would be their baby and not yours.

Very true. I'll have to contact them and post the pricing for my area.
    Thank you

Post back with what you find. I'd be interested to know what they would charge.

I just found this thread and was about to guess that another car might be cheaper than a new engine. Then you completely stole my thunder. :D

Sounds like his engine has a failed head gasket. Should only cost a few thousand to have them change that, -maybe- less than a thousand. ;)

$10,000 is a good down payment on a new car.

You can get a used motor with under 80K miles for $1200-$1500 on car-part.com. Use LKQ (they are a multi billion dollar company listed on the stock exchange). Worth over $12 billion market cap with nearly 50,000 employees. A little more reputable than Joe's Truck Parts in the middle of the hood.

Surprisingly, for whatever reason, the gen 2 prius motor you can get for basically free. Only $150 complete assembly low miles. Maybe $250 tops. Probably cause it rarely goes bad they just can't give them away. For some reason the gen 3 motor is expensive.

The easiest way is to go to google.com and then search "LKQ" + "YOUR ZIPCODE" and call local office. They ship nationally for free. And they will even check the carfax if you ask. You preferably want them smashed in the back or side but they are all from wrecked vehicles. I know it sounds funny but If the car was NOT WRECKED then RUN!!! The theory is that they were obviously running when hit. If it wasn't wrecked then how did it end up at a salvage yard? Probably flooded or bad motor. They are usually sold through insurance auctions or for scrap prices because they are smashed and junk yards acquire them for cheap.

I agree a used engine with low miles is the way to go. I still recommend whoever installs the engine also buys the engine. If you buy the engine and they install it and it is a bad engine you will have to pay twice for removal and installation. With them buying and installing the engine it's their baby.

The local Toyota dealer said Toyota does not sell complete engines, but they could sell me a short block and then I would have to purchase all the parts to make up the complete engine. Rough estimate was 5 to 6K for all parts and short block. The labor would be under 20 hours and estimated at $1905.00. There is a used engine locally for 2K with 50K miles and then the previous labor expense. I decided to find another Prius instead of this mess.

Interesting thread. I always wondered if there was a way to make the numbers work in getting a new replacement engine. I guess not.

On the bright side, I learned about LKQ from MilkyWay. Before, I thought I would have to deal with Joe's Truck Parts in the hood, but now I see there is a huge LKQ warehouse (with excellent google reviews) about 15 minutes from my home. Thanks, MW.
