    Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone has ever done this, or might know what it would entail? I want to make my rear hatch door removable by way of some kind of quick release system if possible. On visual inspection the things holding it on are the 2 expandable rods held on with 4 bolts each, 2 hinges also held on with bolts, and there is some sort of wiring harness that goes into the body of the car.

Even if I need to just unbolt all the bolts every time, how could I go about redoing the wiring so there is a connector to unplug it. I have no clue what wires are in there, and I'm not an electrical person. Would this work?

    Thanks in advance!
    Nate

That wiring supplies power to the rear wiper, license plate lights, hatch release & if equipped, rear camera.

If it's something u really are determined to do, that wiring has a connector plug under the headliner that can be unplugged.

Ok so it seems I might get off easy, no rear wiper and no backup cam, so it just powers the license plate lights, release... and that's it? I am of course determined or I wouldn't post here heh. What exactly is the headliner? And are the specs anywhere of how heavy the hatch is?

Bisco - for now we'll just say to make it like a jeep haha

Me too, because I'm still not sure how possible it will be without messing something up. I'm still trying to figure it out.

That is a very valid point. The car won't be driven for long distances or for probably a few minutes at a time, so it shouldn't be too much to worry about, but are there any ways to minimize that happening? The safer the better obviously.

on the plus side, the prius is very low emissions. the unknown is, without the lift gate, a lot of aerodynamics are missing, and the route from the tailpipe is an unknown.

Just drive with the hatch open.....if emissions are coming in, u'll smell'em. .....just don't smash the hatch w while it's open.
