    56.3 mpg / 387 miles 7/28/04
    56.7 mpg / 489 miles 7/29/04 (at fill up)

I filled up at 40 miles after the add fuel warning. I could only put in 9.4 gallons. The fill up calculates to 51.7 mpg vs 56.7 by the MFD.

144 miles on my Red #9, MFD says 42.9 MPG! Haven't pumped the tires yet, giving a lot of parking lot rides to coworkers! Love it!

Last time I filled up, the auto shutoff didn't work so I know the tank was full full full (it leaked). Current 170 miles into the tanks, still on full, and 49.3 mpg (was above 50 but I take too many short trips where I get stuck in whatever phase that makes it very difficult, or impossible, to go electric unless you edge above 37 mph).

And I checked all my tires today for the first time, all appeared to be at 32, AND I think the oil is overfilled (as has been since I got the car, I'm at 3150 miles). I need to get a more accurate tire gage and then adjust the pressure myself to see if MPG improves.

Rented a base model from Enterprise, drove it yesterday round trip from Burlington VT, to Peabody, MA. I got pretty nervous when the maint reqd indicator came on 15 minutes into the trip, then I noticed the ODO said 5008 - OK, no problem, just time for sched maintenance!

I checked the tire pressure first, 3 at 32, 1 at 33. Pumped them to 38/36 before I left. I didn't think to reset the mileage meter until a few miles into the trip. Temps high 60's, to mid 80's. Turned A/C on about 40 miles into the trip when the outside got to mid 70's, ran it on Auto (74 degrees) the rest of the trip. Cruise set to 69 mph:

1st stop, Burger King in West Leb - 95 miles 51.3 mpg avg. It was about 45 mpg when I topped the Green Mountains and headed down toward the Connecticut River Valley.
    Peabody,MA (continuation) 208 miles, 51.5 mpg avg
Got gas (*) and the meter reset itself
Burlington, no stops other than traffic - 213 miles, 50.6 mpg avg. Had two 99.9 five minute blocks stealthing through construction. Of course, there wasn't much distance driven and I probably lost it all getting back to speed on the uphill but it was still fun to see :)

This morning on the way to work from a cold start, 66 degrees. 10 miles 1.5 of which are 55 mph, most of the rest in 30 - 40 mph zones - Three 5 minute blocks - 25, 50 ~65. No traffic at 4:30 AM!

    * Hess on Lowell and Rte 1 because it was CHEAP (OK, by comparison) at $1.859. Actually saw $1.839 a couple of blocks south on my way up from I-95 but I was late getting to my appt so I didn't stop. If you know Rte 1, it isn't the kind of road you go can easily go back a couple of blocks. Certainly not for 11 cents! The gauge showed 1/2. These pumps have no bellows and the auto lever is removed so I held it at about 1/2 speed. It stopped at $10.06 and I rounded it to $10.25 It took about 5.5 gallons. No gurgling or other "getting to the top!!" noises and I didn't feel any need to push it. I didn't do a calculated mpg because I had driven the car some distance between Wed AM and Thu AM before resetting the meter. Plus, who knows how full it really was from the prior renter.

First block lasted to about 140 miles, lost # 2 about 170, #3 about 195.

48.9 and holding. Quite a recovery from the 39-44MPG off the last tank of gas. I'll need more Saturday once I get to Charlotte, and I hope I find another good batch...

I am at 5 display with 355 on the current tank. Lifetime calculated is now 52.4 mpg at 4506 miles. I scheduled my 5000 mile service for 6 Aug ... should be at about 4900 miles by then. Running tires at 42/44. Will switch to synthetic oil with the 5000 mile service, then see what happens with the mileage.

hmmm - I am getting a bit jittery in my quest for my first 600 mile tank in my classic - it will be close!!

MFD currently stating 60.5 UK MPG after 545 miles on this tank - the dreaded bong and flashing bar first appeared at 538 miles.

Now I have done approx 50 miles on the flashing bar before now without running out so whether I can do another 55 now to get to the magical 600 will be interesting. Time to drive slowly around the city methinks :)

    sorry for wittering on :D
