I want to mount a radar detector to my visor. In old cars I would run a wire to a fuse box and connect a wire to the body (grounding). Is the fuse box under the steering wheel OK for this? Does anyone know of a ground place near by on the body?
Does anyone know if there is a place to access power by the rear view mirror with the garage door opener?
Any pictures or links would greatly be appreciated.

Wired to my cigarette lighter so it turns on with the car. Used the cig lighter that is under the center console. Tapped from there and ran wires under the dash and a pillar to headliner.

Did you just plug it into the cigarette lighter or did you wire into it behind it?
Did you just run the wires along side the A Pillar or did you actually run them inside it?
And the same question for the headliner?

Your work looks excellent. Was it easy to do and did you need any special tools for it?
Thanks for the quick response and photo.

Easy to do. Wired it behind. If u have the weird cupholder on the center console, you can just pull it up. There are 4 bolts that hold the center console in. I think maybe 5 but its been a month since. It is wired in the a pillar. Just pull the weather stripping off. And as far as headliner goes. Just tuck it in the headliner.

Is this the weird cup holder in the center console you asked if I had? Are you referring to the one that slides out, or the other one?

OP apparently doesn't have a v, so who know what cup holder he's talking about... BTW, our 2012 v Five doesn't have the lower/forward cup holder you show in your photo. Just the chrome ringed holder next to the mode buttons.

The thread prompts me to note that although I have an original Escort Passport, I haven't used it in more than a decade.

I dont have that as my center console. I just have a regular prius. Mines look like this

And when you pop the cupholder. You should see the 12 volt wiring behind it.

I ran the wire tucked in between the carpet and trim/plastic piece to under the steering wheel column, then up under the door weather stripping to the A pillar and up in the headliner to radar detector. Ill post more pics if you want but it will be later today since im at work

I found the following on PriusChat which looks a little simpler as it just goes from the fusebox below the steering wheel , up the A- Pillar and under the headliner. I'm wondering how easy removing the A-Pillar liner is. I assume I can ground to any metal bolt under the dash and the post mentions that the fuses in the side columns are switched but the center column fuses are always on.

In terms of removing the A-Pillar garnish or cover, I found the following link (Page 4) below which is pretty confusing.

I just don't want to screw up the airbag in the A-Pillar. Has anyone removed this A-Pillar cover and is it not too difficult? Are there any tricks to it? Does the rubber weather strip need to be pulled out first?

I'm new to the Prius and I agree I am speeding less, but with all the up and down hills near me, I don't want to get caught at the bottom of the hill coasting just before the uphill because all the money saved by squeezing out that extra mileage will go to the speeding ticket. :)

Laugh if you want. But my first real long road trip in a Prius....albeit on a "Speed Trap" gambit up the Oregon Coast, I got a speeding ticket.

Driven much faster automobiles, and/or automobiles with reputations for being faster, and it's the Prius I get nailed in.

I actually think the police officer didn't like Prius. He seemed a little too happy to give me the violation.

Anyway, since I don't want to get two tickets in one year, I've been forced to think about getting a radar detector myself. It's not so ridiculous. The Prius can at any given moment go faster than the speed limit...and a police officer will give you a ticket for going 40 in a 30 mph zone as quickly as he will for going 80 in a 55 mph zone.

I dont purpously speed. But its a reminder for me not too. As well as an insurance policy. My Valentine 1 has paid for itself a few times over. As far as running it to a fuse box, I didnt go that route because I could not find a fuse that didnt have power when the car was off. So the easiest way for me was to wire it direct to the cigarette lighter since I knew that there was power there only when in ready mode

    Just for the record.
I got my speeding ticket coming down off a hill. It was a bit of a trap IMO.

This was early in my Prius ownership, but what I have noticed is with the low drag of the Prius you do have to be careful. It seems to pick up speed going down hill, silently and faster than most automobiles. I've now noticed that going down even a modest hill, in a Prius you can suddenly find that you have picked up a lot of speed.

It's the small hills that will get you. On a big, big decline, I use "B"...it seems to keep the acceleration under control. But I would say you have to be more attentive to what speed or how fast you are picking up speed going down hill in a Prius.

Also, I did not take the A pillar apart. You can tuck the wires in just by pulling out the weather stripping. If you were heading up to vegas, victorville or barstow anytime soon I can install it for you.

Ok. I see where I can tuck it in alongside the weather stripping which is great. Perfect! How did you get it from the weather stripping to the headliner withouth having it go back out and across the A-Pillar?
Also, do you have an airbag in the A-Pillar?
I also saw your Cigarette lighter attachment. My cigarette lighter is on the front facing back and I think it is very difficult to access behind it. (I just was looking at it). I would think the fuses labeled (per outlet, seat htr, sun roof, cig) would all be powered only with the car on so I think the fuse box is easiest.
