For what has read here there are plenty of choices for not only the transmission fluid but any other fluid in the car, the choice is personal and for the record from users it’s not risk at all compare to oem, there are not a single user that report a failure for using alternative fluid in their car, with the amount of Prius out there if the alternative fluids would it be a problem we already would have report of that, but only we can find is happy users of other fluids, anyway the risk that many ones are so afraid start the day the new car warranty expires, so if you want to be risk free just make sure you trade in you car at the end of the warranty for a new one, that’s the absolutely only way to be risk free, no by using oem fluids.

Probably keep trading every 3 years for one of them and the other goes to my daughter for 3 more years of use.
I think the last one might have been $78 but I can't remember. I do not remember WS being that high! Crazy prices!

Toyota seems increasingly strident about minimizing air exposure, so I figure just cracking fill bolt till you actually start filling might help. Fluid stills drains fast.

    Blinker on....
Pulling the thread over for just a bit.

    Sorry!
    Blame @Mendel Leisk

    @ Greyhound......
    No. Not yet.
I listened to the book that it was based on (The Good Shepherd, by Forester) and I'm very intrigued.
My beloved CFO and one SIL want me to watch it with them and thus far it's only available on AppleTV+.....a subscription service that wasn't worth the price for me even when I bought one of their phones and it was free.

I'll probably knuckle under and "try" AppleTV+ for 4.5 fays for "free" and watch it.
The BOOK was VERY GOOD - but maybe not so much for a modern reader.
It was very compact, and dialogue dense, and although very accurate in technology and terminology for the Battle of the Atlantic c-1942 some of the dialogue was more Royal Navy than USN.

No spoilers, but Krause (the destroyer skipper) is VERY devout - which sorta explains the title of the book AND the title change to GreyHound - which used to be a destroyer's 'spirit animal' and is in keeping with Hollywood's atheistic vibe.

It will be interesting to see how they play Hanks in the role of...."the Good Shepherd"...and it will also be VERY interesting to see how Hollywood 'jazzes up' an anti-submarine movie.
    ASW = AWFULLY SLOW WARFARE.

German subs almost never went after the convoy escorts....which are small, fast, and ARMED.
Wolfpacks tended to use a 1:1 torpedo to merchie strategery.
Wound a merchie.....and either an already over-worked and under fueled escort has to break away from the herd to protect him - or another boat can finish him off with their deck gun later when things die down. Torpedoes were limited on das underseeboots to about 14.
Destroyers and other escorts did not have facilities to manufacture their own depth charges, and UNREP (underway replenishment) was not a thing yet - so FUEL and depth charges were VERY limited. Usually 40 depth charges or so on the tin cans (less on smaller escorts) and it was not at all uncommon for an escort to either restrict maneuvering (chasing subs) or run out of bunkerage.

    VERY noodley stuff!

    Also
Not to pick nits but Tom Hanks aged out of the destroyer gig about two decades ago.
He isn't even young enough to play a retired admiral, although I'm a great fan of his.
A three-time passed over for promotion ossifer would have been retired in his forties or been about three grades too high to be a tin can captain.

    FWIW.....
    Sorry for the squirrel chase.

    Blinker on.
We now return you to our thread....already in progress. :D

Exactly! I have not seen any comments anywhere about WS rated fluid by other brands assuming it is full synthetic.

Also you need to do at least one oil change somewhere that has an observation bay so you can see the actual filter being R&Rd.
Trues stories of dealers not doing this or dorking it up out the wazzo.

    Miss my shop lift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree! Looks like an old man and not a angry young warrior.
However the tactics change in battle was a nice touch. And a mobile machine gun would have done a number on a sub that close.
Just like tigers and lions, you pick off the stragglers and fat slow movers.
Told my son, former marine, that it said in a movie clip that more airman died over Germany than Marines! Found out that was true!
My first instructor was a B-17 pilot and told me of a raid out of Italy over Germany with 200 or more B-17s and only a handful came back. He then said, "do you want to hear anymore stories?". We said no sir one was enough!

    Thanks for your son's service.

    Yup.
Early in the war, there was virtually a zero-percent chance that a bomber crew would complete a 25 mission tour.
    Yet they were all volunteers!
Nobody flew that did not want to, and there were a BUNCH of ground personnel working half to 3/4 days (12-18 hours) that would have traded places with them.

Lots of interesting fun facts in warfare, which is why many military folks dig history.

    Fun Fact:
The Norks (and some Rooskies) did something in the Korean War in weeks that Nazi Germany never managed to do in years:
STOP American Strategic Daylight Bombing dead in its tracks.

    Good Luck with the Prius.
Don't sweat the transaxle fluid change all that much unless you KNOW you're gonna keep the car for 10+ years.
    It's WORTH doing.
Just make sure that it's done right.
$200 isn't highway robbery if they use OEM fluid...but there are less expensive options.

For a place with know-how and a lift, anything over $100 is robbery. Even for me fussing around with floor jack and 4-corner safety stands, and taking off the underpanel, it's an hour.

$40 for OEM fluid/washers. I do require my lovely assistant to pour.

    What's your hourly labor rate:whistle:?

Going rate these days is ~$130-160 an hour:cool:.

So if you add up an hour plus fluid and crush washers, $200 isn't that bad;).

For something only done a couple of times in a vehicles life, there's worse things to spend $200 on(y).

So apples to oranges in the business for profit world:whistle:.

I'm guilty of the same thing as I do most work myself, which this week was yard work:).

Compared to some of the quotes I got to do the work, I need to up my personal appraisal of my time (y).

Your sig block reminds me of the book,

    "How Should We Then Live?"
The British were wiser with indiscriminate night raids. However, their targeting for terror effects had some downsides on the German people. Hard to say what was right but in the movie Fury it said it all. "We just want you to quit"

As I read this thread I think the answer to the OP question is:

    a) 1 hour labor (at local labor rate) = $xxx.xx
Lift vehicle, remove under fairing, loosen & remove + re-install and torque fill and drain bolts, Specialized funnel, lower vehicle, test drive.
    b) 4 quarts oil and washers + tax = $50.
    c) EPA fees and shop materials = $10.

Seems very easy to DIY at home in the shade with a beverage and music LOL.
In my area with labor rate near $150 an hour, the $199 quote may be reasonable.
Can this be done in a half hour with a test drive eg: quality control ...I am not so sure.

If the OP DIY's let us know how the procedure went.
    Good luck.

IIRC 4 quarts would suffice for a single drain-and-fill. You want to do 3 thus?
