Edit: I forgot to mention the engine makes this noise for the first thirty seconds when quotes down. Then again does it after it has been sitting off for a few minutes.

Then my check engine light came on. I’ll head to an auto parts store to check the code. I should mention I drive about 90 miles since it started. Fuel economy according to the car is 46 mpg.

Today my Generation 3 2010 Prius started to make very rough noises when the engine came online. So, I put it in maintenance mode so that the engine comes online instantly after starting it so that I can demonstrate this problem. Odometer 238xx. Problem started today.

I checked the coolant levels and engine coolant reservoir shows coolant level below the low mark.

I went to buy coolant at Walmart then I chickened out as it may not match the coolant already in it.

    Any tips and recommendations appreciated

Blown head gasket If you can do it yourself, it’s going to set you back a day maybe two, if you get competent help, and have all your supplies on hand. If you can’t do it yourself, then it’s going to set you back about 5k or so. Toyota will pull the engine to fix it.

    Assume that means 238,000 miles.

Bet not. Yeah it should be done, and the intake manifold cleaned, and an oil catch can installed. Won't undo what's happening now, but...

Yeah stick with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pre-mixed), readily available from any Toyota dealership parts department.

I would avoid stop-leak products, they'll gum up everything.

A good PriusChat thread on the subject:

Yes, 238000+ miles. I don’t think EGR was ever cleaned.

    Some updates:
Initially there were two codes : P0302 and P0304. The Advance Auto guy left it behind in my car. I played with it and erased the codes. CEL turned off but P0302 was still present and showed “permanent”.
I found a small mechanic shop through a guy I met at a Masjid parking lot and he charged me $100 to change out all spark plugs (Sc16hr11) and new ignition coil(90919-02258) for only cylinder 2.
The other three coils were moved around.

First 30 miles no problems. Then again stutter starts ( like before but milder and less duration) when starting engine after few minutes off.

[I really need to find friend who can back me up when I try to follow YouTube tutorials and become overwhelmed].

He’s asking $250 to clean out the EGR. I don’t know if that’s a good price. I offered $150. He also wants $200 to clean out the intake manifold? ( which can also accumulate oil). I’m not sure what the PCV, he’s saying cleaning it is. Or important at this time. He’s also not really recoomending EGR or intake manifold cleaning as no codes are showing for them. But I want Them cleaned and OCC installed because you guys mentioned it and I saw how bad they get on YouTube thank to you guys.

I collected one thin and one thicker gauge wire hanger from a dry cleaner to EGR cleaning.

All of this is happening in the middle of a roadtrip from NY to TX. I’m in Alexandria VA now. At least. The problems didn’t arise on top of the Shanondoah mountains where I plan to be further in my route.

A request: If you can recommended a mechanic who has experience in dealing with these issues from VA/DC to TX(dfw), I shall be much obliged. If you want to help me work on my car (I’m no mechanic) by watching over/ showing me, I shall be also much obliged. In both cases I am willing to pay, just not too much... hehehe! Stealership wanted to charge me $388 ( 3 hours) to diagnose/change spark plugs and coils.
