If it does, then it’ll be their second 600+ mile range vehicle in the lineup.

Darn few Rav4 hybrid owners are getting anywhere near 600 miles of range on a fill up. They may advertise it that way but only on the most optimum conditions, temperatures and speeds and with a following wind. And running well beyond the Empty sign on the gauge.

    Love mine.

The quoted range is full to out-of-gas, not to empty or gas light on.

Yup. If Toyota actually did it right they would quote the Prius Prime at 549 miles of range which is 54 mpg combined until the low level fuel light comes on which is 9.7 gallons (11.4 - 1.7 from page 655 of the owners manual) and then add in 25 miles EV range. I just took the 39 mpg combined of the RAV4 Hybrid and multiplied it by the 14.2 gallon fuel tank then added the 39 miles EV. That comes out to 604 miles range. If they have the same low level light of 1.7 gallons, then the range for the RAV4 Prime should be 526 miles of range.

All of this uses EPA and not personal experience which in a few cases among us may be closer to 700 miles real world range.

I don't see what's wrong with full-to-out-of-gas as the range definition. That's literally the range. This isn't an airplane with an FAA-mandated reserve.

having traveled over the continental divide during the dead of winter, I could maybe imagine what's wrong with driving to empty . . . . unless you have a metal Jerry can. Only then - you have to get out & whether 20mph breeziness & -16°f. My wife, being a baby, cries when she has to get out in that weather then doesn't want me to say "I told you so". Our best friends in the Flathead Valley just got a new AWD Prius & oddly, the sales Critter told them to not let the gas tank get below ⅓ .... but who could tell why .... maybe ignorance - maybe overly cautious.

A reserve is there to cool the fuel pump. The meter hitting the E mark, if accurate, is a warning to gas at the very next chance. But if that reading is wrong? Some Rav4h owners have gone 100 miles past E in an attempt to prove the gauge wrong. (Reserve is supposed to be 2.3G) Current Rav4h models seem to have the fuel level floats set incorrectly in many cases and trouble filling completely especially if the fill is at a high rate. There is so much publicity I'd expect Toyota would have some improvements by the introduction of the PHEV version of the Rav4.

Oh, there's plenty wrong with driving until empty. When I'm out-of-town, I keep no-less-than a 150 mile range reserve (which is one reason I can't own any of the current low-range BEVs). But to know what that is likely to be, I'd like to know the true range. To test it, I ran my Prime down to the light and then measured the remaining capacity (which was 1.4 gallons in my test). That's the only time in its life my Prime has been under 150 miles of remaining range.

How does oil change frequency apply towards the Rav4 Prime or Prius Prime? Assume a traditional ICE vehicle needs oil change every 5-10k miles, if someone is able to daily drive their Prime vehicles at or below the allotted pure EV mileage, when will it need an oil change?

    Many settle for "annually."

The engine will get some use in cold months to provide cabin heat beyond the limits of the heatpump. That cold-weather operation will introduce water & fuel contamination, so I'd suggest doing it each spring.

According to Toyota, it is at 10k miles or 1 year regardless of whether the engine actually came on.

Be aware that once you put oil into it, it will begin to age which will degrade its effectiveness. While you can probably get away with not changing the oil because you don't run the ICE often, you are rolling a dice with this. My personal recommendation is to just follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance, treat your car good, and it'll treat you good.

Oil ages, and also collects water. How long has it been since you checked your oil level? These engines use about half the oil that older bigger engines did. So the level should be monitored and maintained.
