    I called an automotive customizer here in San Diego on Friday and asked what they would charge. They told me 3 days and $800 i could have some paint matched skirts

    Need to see some validated MPG #s. Did some rough ROI calcs for 1MPG savings on current 45MPG avg and 24k miles driven/year:

    @ $800 cost, $5/gal avg > ROI ~ 13 years
    @ $800 cost, $7/gal avg > ROI ~ 10 years
    @ $500 cost, $5/gal avg > ROI ~ 8 years
    @ $500 cost, $7/gal avg > ROI ~ 6 years

    So, if it can be demonstrated to provide 2MPG improvements, then I might recover a $500 cost in as few as 4 years, which ain't bad at all. My breakeven ROI vs my Mazda RX-8 was $2.50/gal, so approaching $5/gal leaves me with almost enough discretionary savings to justify the Hymotion Plug-in Kit (so long as I can charge at work for the trip home). The spats would have to yield twice the MPG savings, if I went the 100MPG baseline route!

    There will not be a good payback calculatable on these. If you buy a set, it will be primarily for looks.

    Having had a 2000 Honda Insight for over 2 years I can tell you that those skirts will not be clear for long and would probably be a baaaad idea. Every time I washed it I would take the skirts off, lay them face down in the grass and scrub them with a brush and soapy water and they were usually pretty dirty and this was even with weekly washings. Then I would clean and dry both sides of the skirts, load them up in the hatch and drive down to the "do-it-yourself" car wash and actually be able to scrub and pressure wash the wheels and tires and everything else you can't clean when the skirts are on. So occasionally you'd see a naked Insight on a run to the car wash! But seriously, even washing every week (and I don't live on a dirt country road now, we're talking freeway driving here) those things got dirty. Just take a look under your front fender wells, better yet just get a wet soapy rag and rub it around in there a few times and thats a fraction of how bad your clear skirts would look. Hope I've made a point!

    But the Insight skirts were designed to be very simple and only have 2 screws on each skirt, they screws used are actually 1/4 turn screws so you just push them into place and give 1/4 turn to the right and they lock in place. They have a flat-head type slot in them so tools aren't really required, it was intended that you be able to use the flattened end of the jack handle as a flat-head screwdriver to remove them if necessary in case of a flat and you could probably even turn them with a coin. Can't wait to see these in person, but I don't think I'll be getting a set for myself.

    Thank you for that info.

    Could you, or any of the other Insight owners, post pictures of the of the
    inside of your skirts/spats, and the method of attchment?

    By any chance, is the inside coated with anything -- "undercoating" like in
    the wheel well -- to minimize the chance of cracks by stones thrown up by
    the wheel/tire?
