My odometer is about 1.9% low. After compensating for that, the displayed MPG is about 3.8% high. As for the accuracy of the gas pumps, they are supposed to be tested once per year and should be between 99.7 and 100.3% of actual IIRC.

just got back from 1,070 miles from Bay area to hollywood,Ca,all the way down to Palm Spring desert Ca. Windy highway conditions, high elevations at grave vine area, 4 people on board, luggages + full size spare tire, drove speed 73mph - 80mph, total fill up gas 18.9 gallons, calculated average 56mpg which is pretty good with my eco.

The important stat is PMPG not MPG.

And that is People Miles per Gallon , looks like you got 224 pmpg !

Vince, how did you fit a full-size spare and wheel in the back? Plus luggage too? Your mileage is great considering all the stuff and people you carried.

I just did a hand calculation with my latest fill-up. 60.3 mpg. That matches exactly what the dashboard display shows. And I drove somewhat more aggressively this time around. I'm impressed.

That's surprising. If that keeps up, not a fluke, good news!

Mendel, I didn't let the gas tank get quite as empty this time. I had about 3 gallons left. Just FYI. Don't know if that made a difference with the MPG numbers or not. (Prior to my previous fill-up, I drove until the fuel light came on.)

Tank number eight. Recovered from the extensive road trip and lowered numbers. Still have not filled up the car with a positive number in DTE...

You can count on no company (especially oil companies) giving you more than you paid. Businesses are in for a profit. Gas pumps should always give you a little less than a gallon. I would suggest the Prius is more trustworthy than the gas pump. A flow meter is the best way to calculate MPG and I assume the Prius does that in some manner. Aircraft use pounds per hour and is very accurate. Not saying Toyota did not fudge it a little but more accurate than a gas pump.

Still phenomenal MPG on all of mine and the 2016 exceeds the others significantly.

I have seen a BIG improvement in gas mileage. I have a daily round-trip commute of about 105 miles, with lots of uphill/downhill driving. Speed ranges between about 15 mph for the first 3 miles and 60-75 mph once I reach the highway. With my 2010, I found it rare to hit 50 mpg on the display, and my calculated real-world fill-ups averaged around 45 mpg. My 2016 is showing up to 59 mpg daily average on the display (for my hilly commute - I've had up to 70 for trips on flatter terrain) and about 53 mpg calculated. But the biggest difference is that I now only have to fill up once a week (commuting 4 days a week), whereas before I was filling up every 3 days or so. I can now drive around 450 miles on 1 tank of gas, whereas I used rarely reach 400.

No. The gas pumps' accuracy, not being absolute, should fall slightly to either side of exact. Any company consistently erring to one side should be nailed.

I've tracked every tank on our 3rd gen going on 6 years, and there's no way the dash display errors are accidental, imho.

Fuelly with 14 x 2016 Prii indicates 56mpg. What's more impressive is that this is achieved during colder months. I guess summer can't come soon enough for all the'16 owners! This is very tempting, more excuse to change my 2010 over... hmmmmmmm

It looks like I will be able to drive over 500 miles on my current tank before filling up.

In eleven years of driving my 2005, I saw mileage above 50 mpg only a few times. The overall average was around 47-48 mpg. In seven hundred miles in the 2016, I am averaging 58 mpg. So far, I am both surprised and pleased.

I don't know why I said 450 miles. I routinely get at least 500 miles on one tank -- I could probably get close to 600 miles but I need to fill up the night before my next-day 105-mile commute.

Got 58.88 MPG on my first tank for my Prius Three (actual measured MPG derived by dividing miles driven by gallons of gas taken). This was about 2 MPG better than the MPG indicated for the Trip on the dashboard display, which was 56.8 MPG. This was using Eco driving mode.

Those are nice numbers! Unusual to calculate higher MPGs than the indicated display. Usually it's the other way around. Keep reporting your MPGs for both calculated and indicated to see if this is the case.

So far with our 2010 Prius for 500 miles indicated mpg is 61.8, which would be a calculated 58 mpg or so. Not bad for a car with 141,000 miles on the clock. Looking at the 2016-17 Prius Eco 2 model to replace it with. We have a 2014 Volt in the other stable as well. So we will have the best of both worlds...
