Rear passenger door requires unlock to exit

if you set it for drivers door unlock only, does the front passenger have to unlock the door to get out?

 

Isn't that how door locks have normally worked since the beginning of time? Automobile time, at least.

A common modern update.

I've never had any car (of 6 brands, non VW) work like that. As a kid, we always had to pull the lock button up before the handle could open the door.

I am completely unaware of that being a common industry 'correct' operation. Is it a VW-specific feature?

 

Before you spend too much more time trying to figure this out............
Please be SURE that you understand the "child lock" function properly.
Switch it to the other position and see what difference it makes.

 

That won't help a bit. Switching the child lock to the other position means that it won't open from the inside even after unlocking it, as OP was hoping for:

There is simply no way to give the rear doors all the same functionality as the front passenger door. And mostly not just on Prii either, but other Toyotas and many other non-VW brands too.

 

I don't recall ever being able to get through a locked door.

For those of us with Liftbacks, it is pretty clear from his 'symptom' description that he has the child lock switch set correctly. If he had it wrong, his 'symptoms' would have been different. For instance, they wouldn't be able to get out even after performing "they need to unlock the door."
