You are half right, they are dry parts of the country such as SoCal. But some actually drive their car everyday.

    I agree with this.
And my opinion is, Toyota puts these things in wind tunnels during the design process. If a rear wiper delete translated into any significant gain, I think Toyota would build them that way.

Also, I've owned a hatchback, in a Prius and a Honda Fit for nearly a decade now. And IMO the rear wiper is important. Unlike a sedan, which puts a trunk between the back and the rear window, a hatchback get's much more direct attack from the dust, dirt, grime of the rear wheels.
I've noticed more recently in the winter, but I really like having a rear wiper for those mornings or other situations when I take off then notice the rear window is pretty dirty or obscured.
To me? I consider it a safety issue. I'm guessing Toyota and other manufacturers do as well. They could make more profit by NOT including them, and they do.

And finally, again just opinion, but my observation is that most people that delete their rear wiper, aren't really doing it for any tangible utilitarian gain. They are doing because they don't like the look. They think the vehicle looks better without it. Seems like the younger generation likes to either remove them, or re-orientate them from horizontal to vertical.

My ultimate opinion is it's best just to leave it, and use it.

That was once true but is now out of date, at least in urbanized Moscow.

But then they used to bring their 12v batteries inside the house for the night too...

In Soviet Russia, wiper blades get wiped.

I drive with my rear windows down 1” during commute no mpg difference. Rear wiper delete probably yield no more than .05% mpg increase at city speeds.
