Actually, we advised the NHTSA today about our voluntary action affecting about 170,000 Prius vehicles in the U.S. Some of the earlier information posted here and elsewhere likely originated from an MLIT release in Japan very early today. TMS USA added a topic re our U.S. SSC in the main forum section.

    Thank you for your information.

Well, hopefully that lets me out! :) My VIN ends in 314XXXX, which evidently means it was made in the Tsutsumi factory sometime after November 8th, 2005. This would make sense, since it came in the first week of January, 2006.
Darn, should have bought that Explorer instead!

I got a letter from Toyota about the recall today. I called my dealer and found out they have everything they need to replace the affected parts ready and that it will take about an hour to fix it when I take it to them on Friday. It is so nice to own a car made by a company that can find and own up to possible defects before any actual problems or accidents occur.

I stand corrected - thanks for pointing that out, plasm and Ken.

I guess dealers in North America can't act as fast as dealers in the home country. My dealer in Hiroshima phoned me May 31 and I took the car in for parts replacement the following day. The work took about 40 minutes. I spent the time in the spacious beautiful showroom reading a novel and sipping free drinks :)

wow, that's impressive. it may be a parts issue since my guess is that they are all produced in JP. as we have just found out, the southeast region does not get information as quickly as the rest of the US does, which is even more of a hindrance.

so does the car feel any different now that the recall work is done?

I am very concerned because after hitting a curb on the passenger side a few months ago, I had a loud rattle on the driver's side for a few days. It is gone now, but I am afraid it might be related to this.

From what you describe, I doubt it would be related to this issue. If the part cracked or came loose, it would almost certainly remain cracked or lose and you would likely be experiencing steering problems. The human tendancy is to attribute their own experience to things they see and hear through media (I knew my Psych. of Mass Communications class would come in handy one day!). Much of the same psychological process occurs in hypochondriacs who may sneeze and think they've contracted the Avian Flu.

Nonetheless, if you think you may have damaged your steering or any other part of your car, as a safety precaution you should have it looked at, if for no other reason than to have piece of mind.

I'll tell you what is impressive about that. The fact that they called you, showed personal attention, and provided you with a nice place to wait and enjoy free drinks.

All too many dealers in the U.S. have waiting rooms that aren't much better than a walk in closet, serve inexpensive and poorly brewed coffee which has been sitting in the pot for 6 hours burning, provide 5-year-old magazines for you to read, and the most uncomfortable chairs you can imagine. You are just one of the many cattle they see every day. I'm tired of being treated like a moo moo by the auto industry as a whole.
