Red Triangle after changing 3-way valve

    I changed the infamous 3-way valve, captured about 16 ounces of coolant in the process. I have refilled the system with this captured coolant and run the engine for several minutes but the red triangle will not go away. The reservoir is full and the radiator is full. I've jumpered the terminals of the CHRS relay socket with the engine off and running. I squeezed the radiator hose with the engine off and running. I've run the cabin heater. No fault codes. Any other suggestions?

    What were the fault codes that you read prior to the 3-way valve replacement?

    • What are you using to read the codes?
    • How did you know to replace the 3 way valve?
    • Where in CA are you located?
    • How many miles on your Prius?

    I'm using my Innova fault code reader. The car threw two fault codes prior to replacing the valve: 1116 and 1121. I'm located in Rossmoor which is across the 605 from Long Beach. Prius has about 200K on it. Also, when I jumper the CHRS relay, I don't hear anything but I do know I'm completing the circuit as I see some sparks.

    Also, I have sent out the touch screen for repair so there are several connectors hanging out of the dash. I sent out the touch screen because the nav system failed, the air conditioner was intermittent, and sometimes the car wouldn't turn off.

    Given these items, has the car sat for a period of time idle? What level of charge is shown on the display of the hv battery? Do you hear the battery in the back running at all? Is the hv battery the original?

    Techstream is the tool you’ll need to diagnose what is causing the red triangle;).

    Any suggestions on the TechStream product? I'm seeing mixed reviews on one of them on Amazon.

    Bad 3 way coolant valve does not trigger the red triangle, just the check engine light. If you have the red triangle, you have a different issue.

    You'll need a code reader that's capable of reading all the prius codes

    I just bought one off of Amazon and had an old Windows XP laptop laying around;).

    It does the job well:

    It is a bit fiddly to get working, but once you do, it is powerful :).

    Just did a bunch of searching on the 3130 and didn't turn up much.

    Given the red triangle, we will say it is not fully compatible.

    You might try calling Innova customer service and ask about compatibility or lack thereof.

    ... or it may just need loading some additional files to extend the capability to all Prius ECUs. Contact customer support to see if any addition (sometimes for a fee) files are available.

    So I got TechStream running and downloaded the information into a PDF. Unfortunately, this forum is not allowing me to upload files from Google Drive or Dropbox. The file name is slightly greyed out when I open the file folder.

    The first DTC is P0852. Apparently this has something to do with the Park switch. My MFD was sent out for repair and I have a number of cables hanging but I have a 6 conductor cable that seems to need a home and I'm not sure it was plugged into the MFD. Here is a photo of that cable. Could this be the cause of the red triangle? Does anyone recognize where this cable belongs?

    Okay. I figured it out. It was the Park switch connector. I had pulled the trim piece from the dash to remove the MFD. Now I'm working on DCT C1249 which appears to be associated with the brake system and possibly the brake switch? I also have C1310. Both of these are grouped with the ABS/VSC/TRAC category and both have a blue asterisk next to them from the TechStream printout. No idea was blue asterisk means but it's probably bad.

    That asterisk/snowflake indicates INF's or subcodes for thrown DTC's, try clicking on it and see what pops up.

    After reading about a couple of my ABS/VSC/TRAC codes I checked the battery connections on the + side of the 12 Volt battery. I popped the read cap, the connection to the battery post was tight and clean. I tugged on the two multi-conductor connectors and they seemed okay. Battery voltage was 12.4 volts. I went back to my TechStream app, cleared the codes and did another read out. The red triangle disappeared and I only have two fault codes left: a gateway LAN error and a passenger solar sensor fault for the AC system. Really pleased with the power of the software, all $24 of it. I sincerely appreciate the great feedback and support as I struggled through this multi-fault repair. It's my son's car and it was due for smog check. Looks like I'm good to go!
