Driver's door isn't too bad.... but the rest of it's going to hurt. The fender patch isn't going to be as bad as I initially thought because it stayed low on the arch, but that and the kickpanel are going to be the expensive parts.

While you are deciding what to do, visit an independent body shop to get an estimate and while there ask them if they can do a little "bending" so that the door will close sufficiently so that it can be safely driven..........and then clean up the scratches and leave it that way for a while.

To add on... maybe go get a clear coat spray paint from walmart and put a layer on top to prevent rust.

My insurance agent said that the breakeven point between using insurance and self-pay was around $5,000. Her advice was to self-pay if repair cost is under $5K

I would get a good body shop to repair that.

I think that answer is BS.
Unless maybe your premiums will go WAY up just because of one incident; in which case you should look for a new agent and insurance company.

Got two estimates today - both were $3,000, give or take a little. Waiting for the third via email.

You'e got 3 pieces of metal to replace, and you have to repaint that entire side of the vehicle plus extra to blend it in to 3 year old sun-worn paint. $3k sounds reasonable.

Like I said, you spend $3k and get it pretty and if no lesson has been learned it will just happen again except maybe next time it won't be a rock but someone else's $100k vehicle in a parking lot.

Interesting - took the car to three body shops, and they all came in around $3,000. Two of them did a detailed quote, but one just looked at the car and said, "$3,000". Guess these guys have this down to a science ..

yep. here in taxachusetts, there's a penalty for your very first claim, by state law. several years of surcharges, increased rates, and loss of safe driver discounts. if you hit someone one else, forgeddaboudit.

I don't think any car has passenger side key locks anymore.. save about 4 bucks a car times the millions of cars made.

Id find the body parts used in the correct color on e bay or a salvage yard and have a local shop install them if you cant do it yourself.. will be a lot cheaper then 3 grand or higher insurance rates for the next 7 years... if its only a cosmetic issue live with it until cheap parts become available..

No, of course not. If we call out bad dealers we should also note good dealers.

My point is that not all dealers run crappy collision centers. Every shop uses the same "book" and buys the same (oem) parts from the same supplier so I'd expect estimates to be close.

I would call that more than a side swipe.

Pretty sad when the break even point on an incident like this is $5000.
