Hi y'all, I have a 2005 prius with roughly 175,000 miles on it. About 4 months ago, we started having issues after longer drives (hour or longer). After turning the car off and sitting over night, the dash lights wouldn't come on and no power steering. However the engine ran fine and after about 20 minutes of driving all systems would turn back on. All dash lights, power steering, heater and such. Then after driving a bit longer or turning car off and on, eventually no warning lights. Car had zero issues for weeks when running short errands around town, just longer use issues. Took it to the dealer, paid $950 to have combination meter replaced, Took a 6 hour trip and same problem today. It seems that it occurs after engine has been off and cooled significantly and the problem to make it go away is to warm up the vehicle. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Did you pay the dealer for a diagnostic, if so which OBD2 code (DTCs) did they find to support a combination meter replacement?

    FYI : you're moderated until you've posted 5 times.

Thanks, it was an authorized Toyota dealer, they didn't say the code, only said it was the combination meter. I plan on calling on Monday when they reopen, but was hoping to get other guesses from others who may have had the same or similar situations.

I have zero confidence in the delearship's ability to deal with this one. They're gonna charge you a fortune replacing stuff with brand new... This is something anyone with intermediate soldering skills can fix... Or do it with Texas Hybrids: Prius Speedometer Replacement

    Maybe this?
2004-2009 Toyota Prius Combination Meter Warranty Extension ZTV | TOYO Headquarters

    Background

"Toyota has received a limited number of reports from high mileage 2004 to certain 2009 model year Prius vehicles regarding the Instrument Panel Combination Meter not illuminating when the vehicle's ignition is turned "ON". This condition may occur in certain cold weather conditions and is identified during vehicle start-up."

If the engine runs and you can drive the car but several systems don't turn on then I would be looking at at a wiring diagram for powers and grounds to the affected systems. Or using a capable scantool to see if anything is "offline" when you have problems.

I don't think the "classic" combination meter failure really fits your symptoms.

Was under the impression that they had opened a second location in northern Florida, so that car trip may not be that far after all.

Have you checked that your inverter coolant water pump is pumping fluid properly?

This Luscious Garage video 'Gen 2 Prius Inverter Water Pump Flow' shows you how you can quickly check to see if your inverter coolant water pump (ICWP) is working well.

This post by Patrick Wong will give you an idea of what is involved to change the ICWP if you find is no longer working. You (and/or a friend) can likely do this. If you do do the job yourself, use a genuine OEM (i. e. Toyota) part for long-lasting results.

As mentioned in another post above, if you're not able to do the job yourself, Eric Becky is in Madison, Wisconsin, and will certainly be able to help you out. He is always happy to take your call and work through the problem with you.

Yes, it was brand new in September. That was the first course of action when the problems started
