Thanks! I'm sure these will show up in PriusChat searches at some point now. It's nice to have the part number to go along with the part name when you do a search. (y)

It just so happens I have 2 replaced engine water pumps currently on hand:

    B04A196D-5042-48E1-B11E-6A3A5CD8B150.jpeg

The top pump is the one out of our 2010 at 175 k miles and the bottom one is out of @The Critic ’s at 180 k miles. Both spin in the same manner as described above: stop after about a second and there is a bit of resistance if just simply rotating.

Below are pics of @The Critic ’s Cooler after the same 180 k miles:

While not completely clogged, there are deposits;).

    More data(y).

    The more data the better!

The 2 ports on the outside of the intake (passenger side) were wet looking. Worn gasket I believe. I didn't notice this at my last oil change 3k miles earlier. Glad I did all of it.

@Raytheeagle When are you going to clean out your EGR again? I was thinking at the next spark plug interval.

That will require an oil catch can to keep at bay; it's regularly refilled by the pcv hose.

My plan (given our Prius consumes a bit of oil) is to pair every engine coolant change with the cooler circuit cleanse;).

Might sound extreme to some, but this job ain’t that bad and I have everything off and ready:).

But definitely plan on doing it again I would say and less mileage before the next one(y).

After the first coolant change it's 50K miles (or 5 years) on the US schedule, sounds like a good schedule.

Still, you don't have to sync coolant change with EGR clean, if the object is to avoid coolant spill: just draining a couple of liters of coolant into a clean container at the outset, the coolant level drops below the EGR. Then pour it back into the reservoir after.

And, clamping the coolant hoses before removal is somewhat futile: the EGR cooler is above some of the hoses.

I predict that they will go to all electric brakes with no friction pads sometime in the future.

The new generation of mechanics will need to be an electrician first or they won't be able to troubleshoot the car.

I recall Toyota or Honda (maybe Honda) starting an assembly plant in the States, and they had to teach a lot of the new hires basic math. I believe they were all (or mostly) high school grads.

Also recall, when I took my Vocational School steel detailing course, that was the first time trig started making sense to me. Practical applications in particular, make something click, I find.

We are in trouble in the US as far as education goes. Back when I was in my mid 30's I joined the US Air Force Reserves.
You had to pass a test to get in so I went to South Bend Indiana with my recruiter and took the test with a room full of people. You have to have a high school diploma even to get into the reserves so everyone in the room had at least that as far as education goes. Then the sad part, the recruiter told me that half the people in this room will fail the test.:(

For data reference, here's a look at the dirty cooler from my 2010 at 142k miles:
    dirty egr cooler 2010 142k miles.jpg

And cleaned up with the quick and dirty, 2 or 3 cans of Brakleen flush:
    cleaned-up egr cooler 2010 142k miles.jpg

Of note, the car was a zero oil burner until it's tragic passing at 150k miles. It did, however, suffer the light acceleration shudder with blockage of the intake manifold EGR small ports at 97k miles. This was easily remedied to silky smooth light acceleration with a quick and dirty IM pull and clean.

Techstream will help but there is a whole lot more to troubleshooting than just having the right tools.
Most Toyota dealers do not even own a labscope.

Sorry, I got way off topic.

Meh, ICE technology isn’t going anywhere any time soon. And when it does, society will adapt;).

And tools will be better understood as the technology develops to deal with troubleshooting needs.

As someone who works for a company that a lot of their technology is still 20th century, I’m helping push them toward the 21st:).

If we don’t adapt, we’ll get left behind .

And I’m making sure I stay up on technology and doing what I can do promote the same(y).

Those are some high prices for gaskets and stuff. I still remember changing my gen 2 water pump and belt for $60

I’ve bought the gaskets for about $30.

A new cooler and valve are excessive where a salvage one is just as good and 1/3 the price.

But if you can clean the cooler with a pressure washer, you wouldn’t even need the spare.

Maybe I should look at selling my spare:whistle:.

Doing the EGR and intake manifold, I didn't change any gaskets. To be fair, this was with a measly 76K kms. Also, no new compents, just clean everything. The EGR pipe and valve are a walk in the park, the cooler just takes a little patience and some chemistry. Or @Raytheeagle's blaster.
