For the life of me I cannot find the section in the owners manual that explains how one can replace the engine air filter? Did anyone replace theirs yet? I know the maintenance log that came with my car recommends changing it at 30,000 miles. Was curious.

is it different than gen 3? big black box under the hood with four retaining clips, pop them off, take out the old filter and drop in a new one.
if you can't find it, it should be in the drawings near the beginning of the o/m.

Anyone who can't figure it out without the manual, would be better off taking it to the dealers, it's not rocket science is it.

I hope it's in the owners manual, and Toyota didn't do what Honda did. My 2013 CRV manuals have many of the simple maintenance items deleted. They added "take it to your dealer".

Here is the only thing I found in the owner's manual.

No information on how to remove or change, though.

Owner's Manuals aren't what they used to be, sad. It'll be the big black thing in centre of pic:

    upload_2017-1-13_14-24-22.png

And the flagged clip is likely one of two that need releasing. Once those are off, if you lift on that end, and try shifting, there's like a pair of tangs at the other end that can be shifted to allow them to come loose. Then lift the whole thing, it'll likely resist due to all the hoses, and reach in, lift and slip out the filter. Note orientation, but there's probably only one way it'll go.

The dirty side (air intake) looks to be the underside. Even though the schedule says replace, I would just inspect, and if it looks only marginally dirty, just put it back in for another 10K or so. If it is pretty grubby, put it back in and then order the replacement.

FWIW, we're at around 65K km's on our original filter, it looks practically new still.

Here's what an old-school Owner's Manual used to cover, and under 100 pages:

Yeah I've been noticing that. Our 06 Civic Hybrid still had an oil change description, for example. More recent manuals are deleting more and more.

Not really. They have a diagram of the engine compartment and decided not to label the air filter.

I found it easier to manoeuvre the airbox lid by loosening the big hose clip on the Gen 3.

Shame on Toyota and Honda for doing this. If changing the air filter is not in those manuals, hundreds, of pages, what's in there?
