So I'm researching the process to replace the engine and transaxle at the same time. I've driven 5pds and have had to resurface the flwheel when replacing the clutch. Is it possible to do this with the prius design?

No need as there is no clutch that operates in a conventional sense. The cvt's dual planetary gearsets allow zero speed at the wheels in drive along with variable gear ratios and reverse all without a clutch or torque converter. In reality this computer controlled transaxle with two electric motor/generators is the real engineering marvel in a Toyota hybrid, especially considering its small size.

k, so just replace the 'damper' and I'm good?

end goal is to replace the aging 280k transmission while I swap in the 4th gen engine.

You can buy new transaxle parts if you wish but there are no real wear items in it other than maybe some bearings. But you could get a low mile transaxle and swap it in if you want.
