Historic places on the US Atlantic and Gulf coasts, including the Kennedy Space Center in Houston, may be threatened by sea level rises this century attributed to global warming as found by a new study published in PLOS One.

iirc - somewhere near the Georgia border - the state's highest elevations is only something like 300 feet. It won't take much to sink a lot of the state, but who knows, that might slow down the destruction of a lot of the estuary on the southern end. More scuba sites!

    • Kennedy Space Center is on the Florida East coast in the middle of an estuary.
    • Johnson Space Center is on the shore of "Clear Lake" that is tidal from the Gulf and subject to hurricane flooding.
    • Wallops Space Flight Center is on the Virginia East coast near the shore in an estuary.
    • Michoud Assembly Facility is on the Mississippi coast with barge access to transport space vehicles to Kennedy and floods with hurricanes.
    • Stennis Space Center is just North of Interstate 10, the Gulf Coast highway and subject to hurricane flooding.
Estuaries don't have significant human occupation so if a rocket blows up, the risk to human life is minimal. So for Kennedy and Wallops that do launch rockets, their placement makes sense. Michoud and Stennis do rocket engine testing so being away from complaining neighbors makes sense and when an engine explodes, limits the risk.

The one I'll miss is Kitty Hawk.

For every negative there is a positive. not necessarily equal and opposite.

It's not just a few US landmarks at risk - a significant portion of the world's population lives on a floodplain, near the ocean.

i'm more concerned about people than landmarks, but these discussions never lead anywhere.

most of these landmarks will probably be sold off in a few years anyway.

That does it for me. No more more vehicles, no more computers, no more technology, no more McDonald's.

Virginia we are sinking already due to our sucking all the ground water out from below us, as well the elastic ground is snapping back to shape from the glacier period. So we are hosed anyways, but we figure if everyone goes to zero carbon it might give us more time (glub. glub).

Modern history lacks the historic pandemics and plagues that tend to regulate population numbers, so this could be nature adjusting the balance. Me, for the last few houses we've lived in houses at the top of hills, last one was near the top of a mountain in Wales. Not much danger from flooding, but huge risk from lowland immigrants come the next mega-flood!

same, sold our beachfront property in 2013. hopefully, picked a spot half way up the hill, so the lowland immigrants will march right by on the way to the top.

Well, were not quite out in the boonies, but more likely to find sheep and cattle in the back yard here. Truth, once had a stray peacock on our lawn from a large property a few miles away! He seemed quite angry so I was glad when he relocated himself!

When it gets hot as hell here, I'll migrate back North, although I'll pass on nice beachfront/riverside properties.

We are now a bit over 2000 feet in altitude, so flooding shouldn’t be a concern. However if one observes the fires in S. Ca, that is really tragic. The best answer is don’t worry about the unknowns, and if it happens remember to be a mensch. That’s the best one can do.

funny, we also have a neighborhood peacock. haven't seen it in a few years, but it used to roam the streets from time to time.

When they're riled, they're not to be messed with. I admit I was scared of the one that threatened me in my back yard. Back on their own territory they're somewhat placid, mixing it amicably with other poultry and crowds of humans.

There is a winery with at least a half dozen wild peacocks on a route that my running club takes regularly. One day our group of maybe 10 runners stopped to admire them. One spread his tail feathers. The women in the group were all fascinated. The guys noticed, but didn't gush on about it. A woman commented that it was a mating display intended to attract females. I commented that it seemed to be working...

Hmm! When they shake them noisily and approach you with their head down it strongly initiated the fight or flight reaction. :ROFLMAO:
