Road trip help.

    Well my 06 Prius I was going to take on a road trip. I was only getting about 38 MPG so I thought I'd try to help that, I clean the mass airflow sensor and throttle body. Change the oil and oil filter and also new air cleaner. Seems to be running fine battery seems to be charging good. Now I'm pushing 35 MPG. What did I do wrong?

    It might not improve if the car was already running as efficient as it could.

    You should reset the car by disconnecting the 12v negative for a minute.

    Some questions:
    • Tire pressures?
    • Type of gas?
    • How old are the tires or how much tread is left on them?
    • How many miles to produce the 35 mpg?
    • Original traction battery?
    • 12 volt battery reading after sitting overnight?
    As you can see, there are plenty of factors at play ;).

    I should have noted that in the post I did check the codes with techstream and did reset codes. Only two it is reading are something about air pressure in tires.
    Any ideas of what else I might try? Would like to pick something up before I exit Missouri.

    Car is throwing codes so why not tell us the codes? What are you using to get the codes? Probably will not decode hybrid codes,

    Usually the reason your getting 38 mpgs is because the hybrid battery is on its last legs. I would not take a road trip in a 2004 with the original hybrid battery.

    Well she did work her way back up to 40 MPG last night. Must have just needed to recalibrate. It is an 06 and Hybrid battery was replaced 3 three months ago with Dorman battery. Does anybody have any little secrets we can do to these motors to get better MPG?

    Yes the best secret to improving mpg's is replacing the Inverter coolant. Cooler the Inverter the better the mileage. They figured that out with the G3 and made a separate inverter rad from the main rad. I think they had too as that inverter is more powerful than a G2.

    Tire pressure.

    Baseline the car to see how bad it is. Find a nice straight road no hills. Turn off the ac and lights. Put the car in cruise control and reset the mpg meter on the mfd. Put the cc on 60 miles an hour. Drive for 3 miles. My 2007 with original battery gets 51 mpgs in that test. My tire pressure is a 38 lbs all around.

    Help? Made it to Wheeling Ohio and my inverter water pump went out code P0A93 how far can I drive with that code? Heading towards Harrisburg PA.

    You can go small distances before the inverter gets too hot and shuts down. Highway speeds won’t be doable. I would look for a Toyota dealer near Wheeling and give them a all for a new pump.

    I bought my OE pump for $60 shipped. If I were you, I go ahead and order one up now. And put in a brand-new one as soon as you can. Keep that use one as a backup. I had mine shut down on me last week on the highway. You don't want that.
