    I've given a credit card number as a deposit. They don't actually want it as a deposit because they lose the percentage. It's just a show of good faith for them to hold a car.

    I'd pass on that one as well. Use truecar.com or aaa.com (if you are a member) & expand the radius as far as you are willing to travel.
