    • Years ago, after I had run out of gas by forgetting to look at my gas gauge (for about the third time) I decided I would always carry a small jerry can of gasoline for emergencies. For about a year, I carried a 10 L plastic fuel can, but over time the gasoline seeped through the plastic, and the interior of my car smelled like gasoline. Not only that, but in the summer, it would swell up like a balloon. So I found a military surplus fuel container with much thicker walls, but still plastic. As with the previous container, it swelled up when it got hot, and eventually smelled of gasoline. I decided that a metal jerry can with a good seal was the answer. I ordered one online for about $35, which seemed like a good deal, but after I filled it, I had the strong smell of gasoline in my car. I found the cause to be a small leak at the bottom, where the seams were joined. I returned it, and ordered another. Unfortunately it leaked also, but instead of returning it again, I assumed that these were rejects, therefore the low price, and I endeavored to fix it myself. I looked for "fuel tank sealer" but it only came in large cans, much more than I needed, so I decided on the old remedy, Seal-all. It's made for gas tanks, but it comes in a tube and is made to apply to the outside as a temporary fix. I wanted to have it fill the seam-gap from the inside, but that was impossible. I researched which solvent would thin Seal-all, and it was acetone. So I mixed about half a tube of Seal-all in a half a cup of acetone, poured it into the jerry can, swished it around (after I'd emptied it of gasoline and let it dry out) and left it on a level place outside to evaporate. It took about a day for the acetone to evaporate, and then I filled the can with gasoline. So far, no sign of leaks at all.
    • It is technically illegal to carry a container of fuel in your car where I live, but I keep it in the cardboard box it came in, so it's not obvious to anyone that I have it.

Why do you need 10 liters of gasoline?
A Coke bottle is enough for me in the most emergency case.

A plastic Coke bottle will expand and smell,
just like a plastic fuel container.

There is no need to pour it right up to the neck.
When this bottle is lying at the bottom of the trunk, its temperature is significantly lower even on a hot day.

Glass containers are a great idea .... only it's important to fill it until there's no air. Reason being and a good example - car fuel caps form a vacuum. It's the atmosphere that begins to break down fuel. Full to the brim also ensures no condensation can form during quick warm-ups.

Running out of gas is a bonehead move.
Carrying a gas container inside your vehicle, even worse

Every ICE has a gas container.

    Storage safety is another matter.
As to the Ops point, Jerry cans can be so cheap they are worthless, and very reliable when you spend $100 each. USA vs china

You're probably right Mendel, since I haven't run out of fuel for decades.
But I'm too old to change now.

My car averages about 5 L/100 km in cold weather, so a 2L bottle would take me about 40 kms. Not really enough if I were in a remote part of Alberta. I once ran out of gas between Red Earth and Peace River; dangerous place to be stranded. I know someone who had a flat tire, and was hit over the head with a tire iron and his truck stolen. No thanks on that one.

There was a period I was carrying extra fuel in the car. Instead of trying to fight a battle against the buildup of pressure in warm weather, I sealed well with silicone a length of hose to the can's vent nipple and routed the vent hose outside of the car.

It maybe still wasn't the greatest idea.

I don't do it anymore. Those cans are empty and downstairs in the basement now, but before I brought them inside I very thoroughly purged them of remaining vapors, fixing them upside-down and flushing well with a steamer hose. They barely even smell like there was gasoline in them once.

Plastic fuel cans are OK for a few months, until the volatile elements begin to escape through the plastic. They also swell up like a football when the interior temperatures rise. That's why I went with the metal can.

I just checked the metal can I keep in my car, and I noticed no gasoline smell at all.

You have a point, because the chances of running out of gas in my Prius are slim. There are plenty of warnings, and there's always a bit of EV range in reserve.

I did let my Gen 3 run out of gas, but I was deliberately trying to do so. When the engine stopped, I continued to drive it on EV power. When I could drive no more, I was disappointed to see that I had no fuel can in my car. As it was, I only had to walk a few hundred meters to a gas station.

Still, I'm a bit proud of having solved the problem so elegantly. No need for pictures, it's easy to imagine.

If you look in my hatch, you'll see a nondescript cardboard box is all.

The danger of carrying gas in a container inside the vehicle is not that it might be discovered by others, but what may happen if the gas escapes from the container.

LMAO. Sure, every vehicle comes equipped with a gas can inside the car.

Could not have put it better!

    Everybody does stupid stuff.
I ran out of gas in my company car about six months ago, because I was unfamiliar with the car and did not know what my tank range REALLY is with this car....yet.
I was late for a mandatory grip and grin....and I rolled the dice.
...and lost AFTER the meeting when I was on my way to the gas station....so I called AAA and had 2 gallons of fuel delivered in under 20 minutes.

    SO...
    Lessons learned.
The dice came up that way because I didn't cheat like I do with my otha cars....
(They call it 'craps' in part because the other words are not fit for polite company.)

I don't like to use the word 'never' nor do I lightly call people idiots.
    Everybody does stupid stuff.
    SOMEtimes it's because of ignorance.
    SOMEtimes it's because of arrogance.

It's idiotic to run out of gas, but I've done it in the last year after carefully considering the circumstances.
It's also incredibly idiotic to carry a fuel can inside a passenger car.
    BUT.....I've done that too.
Just about EVERY time I buy a new car.
I use a partially filled 1 gallon gas can to fully test my vehicle's tank range a time or two so that I KNOW that I know about what it is.
I hadn't had time to do this with my company Jeeplet yet, and to be honest I still haven't done so.
    Yet.
    Hurricane season cometh..... ;)

Risk Assessment, risk-reward, RAC.....there are a hundred systems for the same basic concept.

Safety trolls are everywhere it seems. One even asserted that lithium ion cells will explode if dropped.

I fill up by the following criteria:

    1. Gas gauge has fallen below halfway mark.
    2. Preferred brand of gas station is on my side of the road
    3. Missus is not having contractions
    4. It's NOT the damn station where I got bad gas about six months back.
