I'd recommend calling the Mass DMV - they will be able to tell you.

 

My guess is that it was not the title but rather the application for the title. The title is a document that gets produced after the car is registered and sent by the state to the owner - you if it is paid in full, the finance or lease company otherwise.

If the dealer is pushing the paperwork too quickly just ask them to slow down and explain the process - you need to be your own advocate in the process.

In another post people mention that dealers often will handle out of state paperwork - it is typically dealers near the state line that do this because shoppers from out of state are common so they will have runners that go to either the Mass or RI DMV. Where are you buying the car?
