They've forgotten police and the rest became public because the wealthy got tired of paying for private.

Huh? Sounds like a good, anonymous poll question. Later, running chores.

I will say I can kind of understand why people are sometimes up in arms about taxes. For an example, here where I live we get taxed for a "free" OTA TV repeater service. But that was decommissioned. Yet we still get taxed for it. The entity that receives the funds says it also funds recreation projects in the county. Yet their website seems a bit vague about what exactly they fund. You'd think they'd have some sort of map of the county with pins on it with each project they've funded as well as some pictures of before and after. But the website is article-based with articles talking about things like why biking to school is good for kids.

+1 on your observation on taxes - ....and they are as varied and inclusive as anyone could imagine.

Recently we changed insurers on all our policies for better rates-our municipality charges a rider on every insurance policy you have - so in addition to all the cost for homeowners, auto and umbrella policies we had to add over $300 to the total for city insurance surcharges- of course that is in addition to city/county franchise fees on your electric/gas/ cable (if you have it) and water - I won't even begin to broach the subject of school tax add ons.......
