better ½ is in for outpatient surgery right now. Had to get retested. We've both had the virus - over a year ago, & both still have anybody's, despite the 'science' saying natural immunity only lasts around 3 months. Of course they CYA by saying "in most instances".

Did you get the vaccine? That would boost the titer of the antibodies. Of course, just having an antibody does not necessarily mean you are immune to the virus, especially to some of the newer variants.

A test for an antibody's presence isn't a measure of immunity level.

I've had to put a mask on once in the last few weeks when I went into a federal building for a work-related task.
There were a lot of masks at half mast, and some of the dot.gov employees didn't even bother with that, but there were signs and I didn't want some mask Karen flopping and twitching at my flagrant violation of POTUS' edict.

Other than that, all businesses are BAU, and the schools are only closing this week because they're finished with the full school year and graduations have been completed.
I went to one this last Saturday that was packed to the rafters and not one single person was masked and there was a for-real, serve-yourself, have as much as you want buffet table afterwards.

I went back for seconds and a large group of us went to a Hibachi place afterwards.

    Felt like......2019!

japan is in the middle of a surge. they blame it on a lack of medical professionals and syringes.
olympics are in question, u.s. has designated them 'do not travel'

but i have to wonder if something else is at play. do they have a different summer than us? or is it a societal thing?

That "Do Not Travel" designation applies to about 80% of the world. About 150 countries are at Level 4 today, vs just 16 at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), and none at level 1. With a comparatively high level of vaccinations now, our infection rate is down considerably compared to the world in general.

Last year when our pandemic was in much higher gear, I remember that Administration posting "Do Not Travel" designations to countries with infection rates far lower than our own.

Japan differs in climate slightly but this should point away from being bug-friendly since we're warmer and more arid.

Population density would do it.....perhaps proximity to other surging nations.
I'm thinking that as anal as they are about rules that any social distancing and masking mandates are being assiduously followed.

Of course, it depends on which numbers are 'surging.'
History teaches us that the US isn't the only nation with news organizations that are not as.....ah....'fair and balanced' as they perhaps claim to be.

We have people in OUR country that are still masking, and practicing social distancing, etc....

Given the rapid roll-off of COVID-19 cases, I get the impression our understanding of herd immunity may improve BUT a holiday weekend is coming up.

Every holiday appears to be an impulse that triggers a local spike. But the rate is low enough that we don’t have to worry about saturating medical services.

As for source, l am less concerned than a political leader got an early, accurate report from China about the virus and kept it from us. We can deal with the truth but not BS.

that's a really good question... my understanding is that the Japanese are more prone to rule following, they wear face diapers (and have been prior to The Blessed Virus) more often, and are generally less sedentary than USA citizens. I'm always curious to look into real numbers and real causes, instead of ingesting news articles that claim "explained virus from" when the truth is, no one reported any counts for a week or more, then the "explosive growth"happened when a count was taken etc

    japan covid daily case graph

the ioc says they've got it covered, but the japanese medical establishment wants no part of the olympics.
our govmint says don't go, but if you must go, please get vaxxed
