specifically, i have read that because we've been isolating for so long, we will be more susceptible to bugs as we move back into the public

OK I agree that if you have been fastidiously not exposed to certain antigens for a long time, your immune system may have 'turned over' cells capable of recognizing them.

    Virginity restored.

You've done it again @bisco . Posed a deeply interesting broad question, perhaps without meaning to. Globally a very large number of people have been in antigen-denial mode for about 2 years. Including you and me. A lot of antigen forgetting may have happened in the human immuno-sphere. This seems like an interesting thing to study, and maybe someone will take that up.

the thing is, we know so little about the immune system, most everything is guesswork.

b and t cells are being studied, and hopefully someday, we will begin to understand their functions and get a better handle on immunity levels

It ain't that bad. But here has been presented the largest ever case study to be ... studied, to further illuminate the b's and t's hither and yon. And it's all Bisco's idea, in a manner of speaking.

Prepare to pose for your bronze statue and I hope they let you out before pouring hot metal.

'Like' only because posting LOL takes more keystrokes.

In Tuesday's group meeting, I was aghast and amused at how much FUD about COVID was recited. Like Munro, I don't argue with idiots as their foolishness is not a threat to my precautions.

Oh so you don't really like my expansion of Bisco's pre idea? No bronze statue for you then. Huntsville pigeons will have to poop somewhere else.

    must be.

in other covid news, bivalent vaccines will be available after labor day. uptake is expected to be low, unless there is a major surge this winter.

These new Omicron vaccines have had very little testing before their approval.

A byproduct of AIDS pandemic, we run a risk from doing things fast. The true effectiveness won't be done until we get population studies.

still not getting any clarity from the cdc or fda. i know they hope to get ahead of the curve before winter, but it seems most people are unaware or unafraid of the danger

"These new Omicron vaccines have had very little testing ..."

I'm sure this is true at least in a relative sense. One (potential) benefit of mRNA vaccines is that they can be altered very little and code for usefully different proteins. All other aspects including lipid 'packaging' are unchanged, and little new consequences can be anticipated. Explanations like that will not convince everyone, but balance against concerns that vaccine development is too slow.

edit add media story from August that vaccines were tested on mice only? I did not catch it at the time.

New COVID boosters could get approved using a streamlined review process : Shots - Health News : NPR

Our youngest just bought the omicron variant home with her from college last Friday and we passed it from one to the other until we all had had it.

Everyone in our family is double vaccinated with at least one booster - I have received 3 boosters the last in July 2022.

The kid was feeling ill with a slight fever for 2 days and then fine. The wife ran a fever and laid around complaining for 3 endless days.

I had a slight fever with nasal and throat irritation spitting up phlegm etc from heavens knows where in my body.

We isolated as much as possible but if you live in a home with a common HVAC system I don't know how one really effectively isolates in that situation. In our case we didn't even know we were infected until everyone began feeling bad at the same time. Using the free US Covid Test confirmed wife and kid were Covid positive. I didn't take the test and didn't feel the need to confirm why I felt so bad -just feeling that way was my confirmation test.

I will get the vaccine for the variant readily rather than go through that 5-day scenario again - even though I am easy going and let them make their own decisions on health issues they all will also be getting the variant vaccine Irregardless of their personal feelings regarding yet another booster.

Well, donated blood yesterday, and the Red Cross(at least the Philly area) no longer is requiring face masks. The county it was in might even be in the medium risk band.
