    FLU surge here.

Here is a map from CDC of the current FLU surge that is headed north and west from the South. In Kentucky we are currently in the middle of the surge - schools called off Friday November 4, Monday November 7 and Tuesday November 8 (election day) in our districts to try and stop the surge:

I wanted to explain 'syncytial' in RSV (infections) but its complicated and I may not have it right yet. Syncytial means a cell having multiple nuclei. It seems that RSV infections cause host cells to fuse together and create blobs with many nuclei. They use those blobs to make more RSV particles.

All viruses are (Alien, the movies) chest-bursters AFAICT. Host cells blow out, so it may not matter all that much (to you) whether your ells got blobbed before getting bursted.

i've been on atorvastatin (lipitor) for quite a long time. the doc started me on 10mg/day, but i soon developed the aches, and he backed it off to every other day, which worked well.

more recently, my new doc asked me to try everyday again, and i woke up in the middle of the night with leg pain. so back to every other.

this summer, i had a senior moment, and switched my cholesterol med with my blood pressure med, so i was taking 20mg of atorvastatin a day for a week without realizing it, and had no aches.

when i mentioned this to her, she said let's try 10mg per day again, and it is working.
    i don't understand why though.

grand kids (3 and 6) have come down with something. they were here last wednesday and friday. i open the doors and windows and turn fans on, even if the heat is running.
i just hope it's cold or flu, and not rsv

btw, a television news person described it as respiratory seasonal virus

I don't know that RSV is superbad. It gets media now, but what doesn't? Real medical websites (like CDC and Mayo) portray it as something all kids routinely get.

true, but it is bad for under 6 months, over 65 and immune compromised, so we're in the 'lucky' group

yup, just waiting for the gestation period to end.

coincidentally, my periodontist just called to cancel my 8am appt to have a wisdom tooth pulled, his grand kids gave him something and he doesn't want to pass it on to his patients.
    i couldn't thank him enough.

Fully vaccinated with both Covid and flu, Monday I started getting a sore throat, nasal, and malaise. No fever and negative Covid test. Tuesday was worse and today Wednesday, the morning was worse with a little cough. But after a lot of naps, I feel 'less bad.'

At one time, a little 'wheezing' and I thought about heading to the ER. But no fever, nasal dripping but not blocked, I'll wait until the morning.

The lesson is ordinary colds still circulate.

No side effects from my Omicron-aware jab, aside from the usual bruised-feeling arm.

    Bob,

Do you have an O2 tester? Keep an eye on Blood O2, if it drops below 90%, visit the doctor.

That is implied because of breadth of targeting. It is not guaranteed at this time. Gonna need more ferrets. It is an interesting thing to read and not really long, so...

I suspect the short duration efficacy of covid vaccines has little to do with the mRNA basis of a couple of them, and a lot to do with our immune system response to coronaviruses in general.

Remember that there are many traditional non-mRNA covid vaccines too, not just the two mRNA versions most used in the U.S. I haven't heard of the non-mRNA versions lasting any different than the mRNAs.

There are other coronaviruses out there too, mostly causing common colds. It appears that acquired immunitities to them are also relatively short lived.

My understanding is the vaccine initially generates antibody response that somewhat rapidly decays. But after a series of vaccinations, immunity gets ‘baked in’ to the T-cells so the antibody response lasts longer and can be triggered by a following vaccination.

idk, seems like the boosters are coming hot and heavy. of course, the variants present a seperate problem, but they are working on a vaccine that attacks a part of the virus that doesn't mutate.

t-cells are a whole nuther thang, and more understanding will be helpful.

China? (!wow!), is finally raising hell about useless lockdowns... I'm so proud of them.

    at first:
    "heros work here"
    "only two weeks"
    "trust the science"
    "it's safe"

    then:
"we're gonna fire you if you don't accept the untested shot"

    now:
"we need legislative assistance because we can't hire enough nurses now"

they make great hashtags, until logic and common sense are allowed.

    this stuff is hilarious
