Saving a bunch of money on gas, feels great!

    I keep accurate records in each car on gas purchases and maintenance. Now that my wife and I've driven our 2007 Prius 3800 miles, I thought I would add it all up and see how we're doing compared to our old 1991 Corolla LE, which is now our second car. We drive the Corolla to the park and ride lot when we need to in the morning (normally we just walk 4 minutes to the bus stop, but sometimes we need to come home early or go somewhere right after work so we drive to the local park and ride lot) so we can avoid getting door dings in our new baby (the Corolla has a few already, not a big deal to get another).

    So I added up all the gas I've purchased for the Prius, to drive 3800 miles has cost me around $85. The miles per gallon adds up to 42.7 since we bought the car. The Corolla, driving the same distance cost me almost $300, and it got 25.3 miles per gallon. So I'm saving around $400 a year on gas in the Prius.

    Not a bad deal.

    EDIT - I'll do another calculation after one year of ownership, this October, and see how things look then!

    Saving money on gas is great, Dave. Think of how much less CO2 and green house gasses you are putting into the air, too! It's a win-win!

    I went from averaging 13 mpg to averaging 47 mpg.

    A years worth of driving (about 30k miles) at around $2.50 a gallon gives:

    Before = $5769.23

    After = $1595.75


    Screw emissions, this is what makes me happy! :D

    Remember they come with a free full tank of gass. That probably accounts for some of the difference in calculation.

    One of the best moments I've had with the Prius was at the pump. You see I pulled up while a lady in a big pickup truck was filling the tank. I got out, filled up, got back in, wrote down the milage/gallons/price and so on. Turned the car back on and pulled away. As I pulled out of the station I noticed in the mirror that the lady was still filling her tank. What a great feeling that was.

    We've just about cut our gas bill in half. Our old Xterra got about 15-18 mpg per tank. Right now I'm averaging just over 53 in the prius (over the last two months anyway).

    Bingo that! My figures match yours with one exception, Diesel is $2.99 a gallon now, last tank I filled was $2.89 so my figures come out even better. I three weeks I have saved nearly $200 in just fuel costs. I like it when a fill up costs me less than $30 when a fill up before was over $70 for the same amount of miles. My highest tank so far was $29, my last tank on the truck, $99. Nice, with those kinds of savings, we can afford another one.

    At one of my fillups, there was a lady in a crew cab truck filling up her 1 gallon gas jug so she could cut her grass. As I was filling up the Prius, she was complaining about how much it cost to cut the grass now. HA! :lol: I had to bite my tongue :blink: because I know the look on my face was about to indicate how stupid she was for even saying that.

    Some, yes. But, there's still a problem with the math.

    3800/42.7 = 89 gallons
    - 11 gallons free from the dealer.

    79 gallons for $85 bucks?

    At $3.20/gal and 45mpg, it costs $270 to go 3800 where I live. Maybe the OP meant to say $285?
