New Prius owner here who is very comfortable turning wrenches as necessary, and has learned the hard way when to be careful.

    Planning to install these:

Instructions call for removing negative 12v battery terminal to disarm airbags while working on the seat, which makes sense to me. Is this any more complicated than opening the trunk and disconnecting that terminal from the battery?

The easiest way is to disconnect the -cable- from the body. It's bolted on with one bolt - no need to mess with the terminal covers on the battery.
Keep in mind the airbags can still be set off if you provide a large enough static discharge. So a little care is required. ;)
You will loose some settings and the car will have to relearn how you drive, but no big deal. If the backup beeper has been set to one beep that may have to be redone as well.
