My husband put the new Prius in self-park backup...took his hands off the steering wheel, and the car shot backwards. He hit the brakes when I screamed at him to stop...half an inch from a big truck! What went wrong?

i had the same thing happen in my test drive. the salesman swore it wouldn't have hit, but i was glad i hit the brakes first, and didn't want to risk it.

Have you ever successfully used the parking assist feature before?

I use it all the time in a usually congested parking lot. The only time I have seen such as described above is when the area was a slope and the car was moving fast. But the car also told me it was too fast and I should apply the brakes.

I'm still waiting for an opportunity to test mine out. I haven't had one since I purchased the car one year ago. I live in the boonies. We don't have parallel parking anywhere. They are all angled slots at the local market.

He should have been riding the brakes. It's an assisted driving (parking) aid. Read your owners manual.

Yeah, I don't trust the car to do anything by itself. It doesn't have the intuition that a competent driver has, it doesn't know the intent of the driver, and it can't see everything around it including other cars and the current traffic pattern that it is sitting in.

Don't let the car rule itself, you won't be able to use it as a defense when you run somebody over or hit another car.

I've used it a few times and it is pretty amazing. The key is knowing how the system works as mentioned above. Check the user manual, watch YouTube videos and test out somewhere that's not busy. You shouldn't need your foot on the accelerator at all from my experience, only use the brake pedal...unless maybe you are at a steep angle?
The 2007 Lexus LS460 had the self park feature so the core tech has been around for quite some time.

I love it, use it all the time, I haven't had the need to use the parallel unpark assist yet though.

I've found that when using the standard parking assist, it tends to offset to the right so I have about 3 feet open by my door. However on the passenger side, there's about 6 whole inches past my mirror to the neighboring car on that side.

you need to have your foot on the brake while using parking assist. The computer controls the wheel, and indicates clearance but the driver modulates the braking.

Unparking assist (hadn't thought of calling it this) is very useful; i use it all the time. I can wedge myself into a tight space and later get myself out without doing any of numerous wheel twists or worry about scraping bumpers it works great!

Maybe you didn't let it finish. When using back-in parking it will equally space the car between the two cars if you let it.
Once it's in the space it will say select "D" to go forward or press "P" to finish, if you select "D" then follow the on-screen prompts, it will re-align itself equally between the two cars.
