    This TSB does not fix the brief knocking that most of us are having..., this is to fix a vibration feeling when the engine is running in extremely cold temps..., there will be another TSB coming out for the knocking...

    You are right.., the motor mount does not solve the issue that we are having.., its for a long drawn out buzzing feeling while the engine is running in freezing temps...

    I have thought since this TSB was announced that it might not solve the problem. But could it be possible that the shaking on start up that many of us experience is a resonance problem, caused by fuel mixture or something else, which is amplified by the wrong (to resilient or to stiff) motor mount?

    A motor mount is on order for my car to install under the TSB. I have the knocking at start up not the other problem. Should I have them cancel the motor mount?

    I really don't want my car "fixed" if there is no chance of success.

    Toyota has acknowledged this is a defective part. Why not have it replaced for free?

    For example, Gen 1 Honda Insight has a rear mount that tends to tear easily. Fixing it makes a big difference for vibration, since it is a 3 cyl engine.

    Let me get that straight, My prius vin past # mark is B533xxxx, seems to me that it would be affected also, am I correct?

    Taken from TSB, any vin # before that

    The # sign is the place where the Japanese plant code will be in your VIN. So if it's a 0 it's included in the TSB, a 1 is included before B145712, and I think Toyota Auto Body is Fujimatsu 5 and it would be included before B5351083. Some of my information is over a year old so you should give your dealer a call to be sure.

    Were all MY 2011 units assembled at the Tsutsumi #1? Is the plant code 0?

    The short answer is no, there are three possible Prius plants. See Tumbleweed's attachment in post #47 just below yours for the details.

    The TSB mentioned above (replacing the Engine mount) and the rough starts (loud banging / severe tapping) are two different issues, so let's not get ourselves confused by the two.

    I took mine to dealer, and although the loud knocking did not occur for them, I did have several YouTube videos with me that detailed the problem. The service techs had not seen/heard of this problem before but were all quite interested. The dealer notified tech support in California and they approved my getting a new intake manifold after watching the YouTube videos. My new intake manifold should be available in a week or so. I'll keep everyone posted after it is installed (...to be covered under warranty of course).

    A new intake manifold would be very interesting if it it fixes it.

    One reason for getting the engine mount fix, whether it fixes it or not, is that you then have a record with Toyota of having a complaint within the warranty period. So, if they do have a TSB in another year for "replace intake manifold", you by rights could get it for free even if the car is out of warranty by that point.

    Update, my car goes in tomorrow for the scheduled 20k service and for the engine mount TSB. After rereading the TSB tonight, my car definitely gets the "drone" in the morning at temps around 40F. The gas engagement has also become much rougher (at all temps) so it will be interesting to see if the mount has any effect on this.

    What should I do as someone who's considering buying a 2011 Prius II liftback? Should I ask the dealer about this TSB before the car is delivered or wait to see if the problems show up down the line? Thanks.

    There's a VIN cut-off before the production change. Match your VIN against the bulletin posted in the original post.

    Ah, thanks. But how do you tell if your Prius was manufactured at Tsutsumi No. 1? There's no VIN range listed in the TSB for determining that.

    The 11th digit of the VIN tells you which plant it was made at.
    0=Tsutsumi plant line#1
    1=Tsutsumi plant line#2
    5=Fugimatsu plant

    I'd hold off on the purchase for now; hassling with a dealer over an intermittent but potentially damaging problem isn't something I'd knowingly buy into.

    Ah, thanks, El Dobro. I got a VIN on a red Prius II, and the 11th digit is a 1. Red isn't my first color choice (dark blue is). But my CR-V is red, so red obviously doesn't bother me too much.

    Oh, and the sequence on that VIN is higher than the one in the original post, so I'm guessing the TSB doesn't apply to that vehicle.
