No, you shouldn't be surprised. There is no law in VA about gun control if you've had a mental illness. If you've got a record, maybe not, but being a sociopath/psychopath/hospital-committed is okay. Many areas have no waiting period, and anyone can buy a gun at a gun show.

After all, it is a fundamental right that every Virginian should be able to keep and bear arms, regardless of psychiatric illness.

I think with guns, it should be an all or nothing thing. Half arsed measures are almost always worse than making a concrete decision either way. Just look at Iraq. I say flood Iraq with 500K in troops for a 6 month stay, go in, clean house, set up their Gov., claim final victory, and leave. Whatever happens after that happens.

    with a little less sarcasm...

perhaps we should do what the airlines do now - have the equivalent of air marshalls on campuses and elsewhere similar. look at Israel - everyone carries there (starting at age 18) and they carry automatic weapons - this guy would have been dead way before he murdered 32 if it were Hebrew University.

That would probably work... but would make the liberals heads spin. They'd rather us just be defeated than give it our all.

That is absolutely false. Not everyone in Israel carries a weapon. Those who do are required to be trained in their use, pass an exam and be licensed to own and possess them and all firearms must be registered.

kinda sounds like what we should do or even do here - and let people carry the same weapons the israelis let their citizens carry on their street. i also think there should be mandatory service to country here - give em a choice - military, civil, etc - but serve for two or three years.

on a % basis, israelis or americans have a greater carry rate of weapons? i cant remember the last time here in Gotham i saw a guy with a semi slung over his shoulder getting on a bus.

20k does not equal 500k. Hence, lack of support for surge.

I see.. so.. whatever happens isn't good enough for you liberals..

He sends 20k.. you stomp for feet and say it isn't enough.

Any of you ever wonder why the rest of America considers liberals to be a bunch of whiney snobs?

Obviously it's because people like you take everything we say and spin it into something we didn't.

The guy you saw on the bus in Israel with the weapon on his shoulder was most likely an active duty soldier in uniform commuting to or from base. Civilian do not carry such weapons.

I just read an interesting article in the Jerusalem Post about the difference in the way in which Israelis and Americans react to such tragedies.

    Here are some excerpts:
