Should I buy the Prime or wait for the Prius after that?

As far as range goes my TAH will average (Highway at 65-70) about 40mpg and it has a 17 gallon tank, now that equals 680 miles, well beyond the range of my bladder.

    ^^ Toyota Avalon Hybrid.

Nice car. We don't get it in Canada. (Don't blame them. TCI sells... what.. 8 Avalons a month?).

I could not possibly recommend a Prius of any type if there is any off-roading. The prius is too low, and the tires are hard. Underneath the car and the sides are plastic, all held together with plastic clips. Some national park roads would destroy a prius.

    Strictly a street machine.

The secret to long distance travailing, is to fuel at every stop. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, then at the bathroom breaks, and the stretch your leg breaks.

Prius is a great machine. Even for some dirt roads. I don't understand America's obsession with SUVs. Why is gas so cheap, dammit.

    I'd avoid one like this.

Some of us drive multiple hybrids and own an SUV so we can do things like this. (note the elevation) Can't do this in any hybrid I'm aware of.

Nope. Most hybrid SUVs have a rear electric motor that is less powerful than their regular 4x4 counterpart. I think the Rogue Hybrid is the first full hybrid with a proper 4WD system. (Well "proper" for a small SUV. I doubt it's as good as more rugged models like your 4Runner)

The Hybrid RAV 4 is 4WD. Isn't it a proper hybrid?

No, he said "proper 4WD system." IE, capable of 12+ inches of ground clearance, locking differentials, etc. All required to safely negotiate the Mineral Creek trail (and others) up to Engineer Pass above Ouray, CO., etc.

Believe me, I wish there was a hybrid that had some off road capability. I'd buy it. For me, it's the right tool for the job. I hunt, fish, climb, off road, and many other things, in locations that most vehicles can't get to.

Yeah, I have seeing a gazillion pavement princess monster pickups lifted 3ft high and SUV's that never leave the mall, but that's not all of us.

Just showing the other 1% side. ;)

    Proper 4WD.

Here's a good explanation from Alex on Autos

    And here's an off-road test

Compare to a regular RAV4 (I'm not familiar with Gold Mine Hill but apparently it's reasonably challenging)

Nah, not even close. Here is a smooth section of the trails I do. The photo does not do it justice. Most sections are too rough to get out to take a pic. Those vehicles would be leaving parts behind all the way up and down.

Yeah I think that's just a hill climb. I would not take a RAV4 through the trail in your picture. It doesn't have the wheel articulation capability. Does your 4Runner have KDSS? Does it work?

No mine does not have KDSS. I didn't want it. It adds auto disconnects, for off roading and tames on-road lean, etc., but more to go wrong later. Hard to lift with KDSS, etc. KDSS does work. Many like it. My XREAS in my 03 4Runner was good but it didn't add any flex like KDSS does.

Regardless of ground clearance, off-road prowess, it is a traditional four wheel drive, has a rear differential:

Oops. I was actually thinking of X-REAS not KDSS since that was introduced in 2008, right?. (Was KDSS even offered in the 4Runner?)

Do you know the difference? I only know that they help with wheel articulation and getting over larger boulders.. X-REAS does something with shock absorbers (I think the opposite ones are connected? hence the "X"?). I forget what KDSS does.

    Sorry for the off-topic post.

But it doesn't have a centre differential - just orange cables.
