OK, I just read This Graphic Maps the Energy Efficiency of Modes of Transportation, From Planes to Cars

According to the article, non-EV auto is second worst in terms of total CO2 emission per passenger, determined from the passenger miles per gallon. The illustration in the article is for traveling from NYC to Toronto. It uses SUV for non-EV CAR category for comparison, with average 2.2 passenger per car, the fuel efficiency is said to be 52 passenger miles per gallon. That means, for a single occupancy car, this SUV is getting ~23.6 MPG. With 55 MPG Prius, if I am the only one in the car, it would be 55 passenger miles per gallon, which is pretty close to SUV number with average occupancy of 2.2 used in this illustration. With the numbers presented below, if I am worried about my carbon footprint, and if I don't have EV (that is BEV, not PHEV) to drive, my best choice has to be a bus ride. What would you do? capture-20180529-103053.png

Actually, 55 mpg times 2.2 people would be 121 passenger miles per gallon.

If you have 4 people, your Prius is better than their hypothetical bus.

Yes, if you have 2.2 people in Prius, it would be 121 passenger miles per gallon. BUT IF YOU ARE ALONE IN PRIUS, as I will be traveling by myself, then actual passenger miles per gallon is equal to the MPG of the car 55, which is pretty close to the SUV number of 52 in the illustration. (This assumes there is negligible differences in car's mileage with number of occupants.)

True and I would hate to see ANY car with 2.2 people in it. ;)

Traveling from NYC there actually might be 2.2 people in some of those old Lincoln Town Cars. :ROFLMAO:

LOL. I am short and lean, so maybe I would count as 0.8. My best solution would be to have someone to travel with. As you said, if I had full capacity of my PRIME with 4 people, Prime would be much better for carbon footprint per person than Greyhound, and more economical too!;)

I'm surprised train travel didn't fare that well. In Canada too: fares have skyrocketed; it's mostly novelty, special occasion travellers.

I do not see how they can generalize trains.

If I take an Amtrak train from here to New York City, we start with diesel, I think. We then change engines in Washington DC to electric for the remainder of the trip. The passenger miles per gallon and CO2 per passenger are likely radically different for 2 segments on the same trip.

Efficiency of all modes depends on the assumed average occupancy. Airlines, for example , have increased their average occupancy tremendously in the last 15 years or so, making the estimated CO2 emissions per person-mile for commercial flights much lower.
Amtrak runs mostly diesel-electric trains on their long routes, and often has low average occupancy. But most regional trains I used in Europe were pure electric and were quite full, which would therefore have a much lower carbon footprint .
(Our electric bicycles consistently get around a 3,000 MPGe based on the measured recharging watt-hours, so if you take really SHORT trips, that is an efficient way to go!)

Because, recent con air travel has become hell ride! I need better mode of transportation, both logistically and environmentally.

I would expect electric with overhead feed lines would have a lower carbon footprint than the diesel-electric too.

Did Greyhound commission this study? ;)

Given a choice between 12 hours ride on plain or on bus. I will take bus any day. The problem is, I can't cross the ocean by bus, and 12 hours on Greyhound won't take me far...

yeah, i'm not a fan of any public transportation. i guess that's why cars are so popular. but they won't get you across the ocean either.
our first trip to nyc on amtrak was such a nightmare, we drive now. and driving is a nightmare, so that tells you what amtrak was like.
and we see all the broken down busses on the side of the highway every time we go.

@Salamander_King, editorial quibble: take the "s" off of "greyhounds" in the title? I keep picturing a dog sled pulled by greyhounds...

Was it on Acela? I recently took Amtrak from Boston to DC, but was not Acela. It was not great, but I thought it was far better than plain. I would have driven my car if the choice was available.

took acela down and regional back. while acela gets priority, regional only took 20 minutes extra.

by the time you get to the train, get there, get to your destination, a car runs about the same amount of time. but you do have to know the roads and when to travel.

i'm all for public trans, but it's one of those political footballs that never gets the necessary funding.

Yeah, Acela is no Bullet Train. That's for sure. Aren't the accomodation in Acela better than Business Class seats in regional train? They do charge you First Class for Acela, I think.
