I think Afghanistan was invaded for a few reasons:
1. OBL was hanging out there, and that was as good a reason as any as far as the American public was concerned at the time.
2. It was a country run by some pretty radical muslims, and that made our radical christian government uneasy.
3. As F8L suggested, positioning. It seemed like an easy target that would maybe intimidate Ira(q,n) into submitting willingly, rahter than putting up a fight. And if that didn't work, we could at least use their geography to help support future Iran/Pakistan/UK invasions.
