You are violating utility rules and would have to break their meter seal. They could disconnect you and charge a large fee to reconnect without that device.

The first video was technically incorrect about transfer switches that have to be uniquely wired to specific loads. If you have a whole house generator you can have a whole house transfer switch which is wired in downstream of the meter. With automated controls the generator is started, warmed up and then the main breaker panel is auto switched off the meter and to the generator.

A manual main breaker interlock is cheaper and easier to install but is not automatic, a problem if it is freezing and you are not there.
