I remember my grandmother told me about her father telling her to 'prepare' a chicken on their family farm for Sunday dinner. This chore was shared by all six children, male or female. She refused and the family ate their meal minus the foul. She told me her brothers and sisters reminded her of this for years afterward. She said afterward that she learned how to trap the chicken,snapped its head off, drain the blood, and pluck the feathers. She never mentioned being amused.
Maybe you should have killed the turkey yourself. It might have brought a different perspective to the experience. My grandmother and her siblings did not hesitate to eat the chicken and appreciated the food on the table.
