For newer members: Prius Chat has had its ups and downs before. As the site grows, it hits problems, and Danny has to upgrade the hardware or the software or whatever. Eventually he gets it done and we're back to normal. In the mean time we have slow times, and we either tolerate it or take a break until Danny gets it done.

Remember that this is basically a one-man operation. (Plus mods, of course.) Considering that, I'd say Danny's doing a great job.

And it's free. Can't really complain when it's free. If every member paid, say, $5 a year, Danny could hire someone to get that software running. And if we all had to pay $5 a month, Prius Chat would probably be as fast and reliable as the best commercial sites.

Pageloads seem pretty snappy this morning. Is it fixed? Thanks!

edit: (Posts and PMs are still slow...)

...and the 'thanks' are gone? Still a work in progress...

I had to turn off all of the add-ons in order to stabilize the site. I figured the site being up was better than the site being down with all the "goodies" enabled.

    I love Daniel's idea of $5/month :)

I notice some slight differences: No line below the sticky thread titles; sub-forums listed differently. I thought maybe this was the new software. Anyway, it's nice that the site seems to be fast again.

Personally, I don't care about the thanks count. It is nice to have the thanks button for when you have nothing to add but you want to agree with a post, or just say thanks for a piece of information. But it's not a big deal.

    Good thought. Thanks.

You can cut down on traffic, and spruce up the hardware at the same time. Great idea. ;)

I could care about that as well but the Show New Posts is a must for me... I'm sure Danny will square this all away with some time.

Just a personal observation, but I don't think coming here and posting every time the site is slow again will help Danny anymore at this point.

I guess you're right. It's just that I had thought it was fixed because I thought the changes meant a new software install.

There used to be a Donate button, and many of us donated. Then a new software version or something eliminated it. Then for a long time (seemed like a year) there was on every page something to the effect of: "Coming soon: donate and eliminate ads." Then that disappeared.

Danny knows lots of us would donate.

Bringing up pages (threads, subforii, etc) - MUCH faster. Posting - not so much.

Except this one. This one came up right away

That's what I suggested. It was HORRENDOUSLY slow at 9:34 pm Pacific w/a bunch of my pages in tabs failing to load. This is how many people were on: "Currently Active Users: 944 (111 members and 833 guests) "

I'm not sure how much of correlation there is between # of people on vs. the slowness we're seeing.

Of course, after the bout of slowness, it seems quick again...

The site has been horrendously slow during US evenings (mornings for me). I used to run a large board with exactly the same software and I can confirm that it is a huge pain to get it running fast. Most boards I know switched to IPB or at least upgraded to VB 4. There are other things that have to be done on the server end that can dramatically speed up the software too.

I think at&t is mistaking PC as an iPhone and is throttling it.

Just wanted to update everyone that I'm still working on trying to make things a bit more tolerable until we change servers.

    Note that I said trying.

Danny, thanks for operating a great site that's a wonderful resource for Prius owners. I definitely think it's worth $5 a year and would probably even pay $5 a month.
