Hello all, I just bought a 2006 Prius. It only came with one keyfob (silver logo) and to my eyes, has all indications of being a "smart key". However, the lock and unlock buttons on the fob do not work, and the automatic lock/unlock feature doesn't work either. The only functional part about the fob is that when inserted into the ignition, it starts the car. I have changed the battery and checked the "key" button underneath the steering column. Is there anything I can do without taking it to the stealership and paying $200+ for them to fix it? Thanks.

Have you tried changing the battery on the key fob?

That's probably not the original key fob to the car. Just a replacement programmed to start the car when inserted.

There's a small metal key in the key fob, does that metal key work on the car lock on the driver's door?

check the key fob and make sure all 3 buttons click without sticking. There's also a little red light on the key fob that lights when you press a button.

The light comes on, and none of the buttons are sticking.

when I press the buttons on my key fob, the light on the key fob is RED, not green as you posted.

Maybe you can try another battery for the key fob?

I don't see where I said it was green, but if I did, my mistake. The light is red. I have tried 2 batteries.

I must be seeing things on the green part....

Anyways, I'm out of ideas. I think you've covered all the areas that you can possibly cover. It may just have lost it's memory and need to be reseeded and programmed again. If you choose this option, go buy a USED or NEW keyfob and have it programmed at the same time during the reseeding. You'll want the spare.

Absolute last idea would be to reset the car's electronics. Disconnect the 12v battery for a few seconds. You'll lose your memory presets on the radio and your auto up/down on the driver's window. To fix the window, just hold the window up switch for 5 seconds after the windows closed.

Oh, and is it possible to reprogram with only one fob? All of the instructions I can find involve 2 fobs.

you need to pay someone to reseed the car's keyfob memory. That will erase everything and add what you have in your hand. you can do 1 or up to 5. But if you are going to pay for that expense, you should have a spare done at the same time. That's usually done for free

Have you checked the 12V AuxBattery? I found that when my SKS system started to get flakey, the root of the problem was a failing 12V AuxBattery. This happened last year, when the 12V battery on my 2009 Gen II was about 6 years old and had never been replaced. hope this helps - Good luck - Wil
