So groceries don't fit in the Prime cargo area?

We have a barbecue at work, and I went shopping at Costco for supplies for that and some snack items for the group.

Everything you see in that picture except the case of Dr. Pepper (but including the other four cases of soda pop on the bottom) is here:

    E500_16423.jpg

Most of that is under the cover. I could have closed the cover except for the chips. The rear view was not blocked.

    E500_16425.jpg

The Dr. Pepper and two large boxes of snack chips were on the floor in the back seat. I love this about the Prius - the space between the back seat and the front seats is big enough for large things like these and even small suitcases.

This is what it looked like unloaded, including the Dr. Pepper and the two large boxes of snack chips, but excluding the four big bags of chips which didn't fit on the cart.

That's lunch for about 70 people and snacks and drinks for about 100 people for a week.

I have made a similar run in my 2004 many times, and all this fit in the Prime about the same as it did in my 2004. Better, maybe.

OK, so it can hold all that stuff. Point made. But when you have it loaded completely like that, and then fully charge it up by jamming all those extra electrons in the batteries below, won't that deck rise way up and push all that food through the curvy hatch glass?

Can also hold 26 bags of wet mulch. 38lbs dry, maybe 45lbs wet, close to 1200lbs of mulch in one trip which was all I needed. Also loaded up 12 6ft arborvitae trees and planters the previous weekend, also all inside the Prius. Have put an entire deck's worth of lumber inside the Prius to build a deck including the support beams. Also fit a bath-tub in there, the entire thing new in a box. On another occasion 2 palettes of thick slate tile, close to 1800lbs worth. The Prius is a work-horse. And everything inside stays inside. Doesn't get rained or snowed on like the idiots with the pickup trucks.

It's well-known that the Prius line, in general, is a work horse. However, there's debate about the Prime due to the battery being under the cargo area floor, and the resulting rise in the floor. I myself dismissed the Prime because of this before I took some actual measurements of both the Prime and of my 2004, as well as evaluating my cargo.

Nice pics and where there is a will there is a way. Oh, you have an M & M on the seat in the back. Don't let it melt on the seat.

That doesn't look like the tail of a Prime.

The issue here is Prime vs regular Liftback. The Prime's reduced cargo volume, and load capacity 155 pounds lower than that of the Liftback, will be figuring into my upgrade decision.

Did a similar post for my Energi a few years ago. The lower portion really helps out more than I thought. I only put lightweight items above on the pull out cargo cover. Weekly shopping for a family of four.

Exactly zero, since I'm extremely allergic to that stuff. It would probably kill me since driving with your eyes swelled shut might be considered a bit hazardous.

    Isn't a Gen2 Liftback rated for 5 bales?
That thread was very long ago, so I could be mis-remembering.

I keep thinking of the time our son bought one of Home Despot's bigger barbecues. The box barely pushed in, it was high enough to be touching the roof of the hatch opening, firmly. Everybody put their backs into it, and in it went.

One man's ceiling is another man's floor, lol.

i suspect toyota is caught up in the 'if we make every generation a little smaller, we can eek out another mpg' thought process.
a couple more generations, and they'll be an inch off the ground and no rear headroom at all.

I've stuffed plenty of stuff into the Sonic, that by today's standards is a subcompact.

The issue I have over the raised floor isn't over the less space it leaves for packing stuff. It is over how it shows how little thought Toyota gave to packing the traction battery into the car. Compared to the Prius Two ECO, which is the fair one because both don't have a spare tire, the Prime loses 6 to 7 cubic feet of cargo space.

That is as much space as the C-max Energi loses, but it is Ford's first offering of a PHEV. The Prime is Toyota's second offering. On top off that, the C-max started as an ICE model. Starting as a hybrid, the Prius platform should be better at hiding large batteries.

With experience, and examples from competitors to study, Toyota should have done a better job. Frankly, for a company of their resources and stature, Toyota did a half-assed job in regards to packing the Prius Prime's traction battery.
