I'm dealing with the same thing in Texas ... my tanks are normally around 43 - 45mpg and the last two tanks have been below 40... this one is sitting at 36 or 37 right now (can't remember, wife drives it most of the time).

It's got to be the gas IMO...

My current tank (half of it) gives me ~ 45mpg (city). I usually get 51ish in this weather even with short trips. This is right after an oil change (3.75 quarts) and a tire rotation at the dealership. :(

That would be my first tank - just under 45MPG - see Hybrid Mileage Database - GreenHybrid

    I WIN!!!

28 MPG. Valentine's Day 2007 storm. 28" of snow in 14 hours. Biggest 24 hour storm in history for this area. Plows couldn't keep up. Took 3 hours of beating through the snow to get home (all of 9 miles). Burned a LOT of gas forcing my way forward until the traction control stopped me, then backing up to get another running start. Went around a lot of stuck cars too.

I guess I am sort of cheating on my claim of victory though. I had gotten gas in the morning. I had a long trip 5 days later so I 'filled up' with 4 gallons and had only 110 miles on the tank. But 9 of them were REALLY awful MPG :)

My second worst was 31 MPG - 272 miles, 8.7 gallons - 10F below to 10F above for 2 weeks straight. Pretty much kills the MPG. And, ugly of all uglies, 200 miles of that was a day trip to Montreal when it didn't even make 0F during the day.

I much prefer summer when I get POed if it isn't approaching 55 MPG ;)

same thing as pjm - yesterday, driving south from kansas city to dallas into a very strong head wind. 41mpg average over 550 miles. parts of the trip i was getting in the mid 30's. i had the cruise set on 73mph.

today, northbound, about 65mpg with a 30 mph tailwind.
turned around later, driving south directly into the wind again, it dropped to about 45.

i let my wife borrow my car over memorial day weekend while i was on vacation (bowling tournament, actually) and i returned to find that the tank had 200 miles on it with only 3 pips left on the fuel gauge and the screen reading a whopping 40.2 mpg.

when i filled up i learned the real truth: 33 mpg

my question to her was simply: HOW?

Am pulling ideas together on snow tires for next year --
    • Do you use snows? What type?
    • Transfer the snows on/off the rims?
    • Or do you have them mounted on a separate set? What type?
Thank, I thought a VT-er would be the one to ask about this ;)
