    Newbie here and first post!

My mechanic just did a software update on our 2007 Prius.

What is the purpose of that? It was $97.

Hope I didn't get ripped off. They are very trustworthy.
    Thank you!

Sorry, just reread the bill and it says update ECM calibration files.

Can't find much info about that one!

Sounds reasonable. There are maybe a dozen computers running everything, and all (most?) can have software upgrades. My 2006 has never had any calibration updates, which probably means that something isn't running as well as it could.

If it's a software update relating to the ECU flash, why were you charged for it?

Shouldn't the dealer charge Toyota since it's a recall?

As with other stuff in the car, what I'd guess is that not every improvement counts as a recall.

Generally, something will get the recall treatment if the unfixed condition is determined to be unsafe.

I think some calibration versions go with specific other changes. For example, the Gen 3 EGR service bulletin, T-SB-0027-16, involves both replacing the EGR valve with an updated part, and updating the ECM calibration. I notice I don't have the newer calibration yet, but that's probably as it should be, since it may only make sense with the newer valve. That's an example of a TSB that is being handled as a free warranty extension out to a certain time/mileage, but after that, there would be a charge.

Presumably you took the car to the mechanic to fix something. What was it, and did it get fixed?
