The manuals are going to say 5,000 mile oil changes forever. There is an updated supplement to the manual that says 10,000 miles.
Notice that the dealers know it's 10,000 miles when you have "free" oil changes to redeem, but don't know about it when you are paying for the oil changes.

Toyota leaves owners hanging out to dry, again.
Just got off the phone with Toyota corporate (and a very rude representative).
They will not be giving coupons/ refunds to compensate those who had oil changes done at 5k miles, in accordance with the owners manual.
Guess they have not learned from the recall fiascos.

It seems to me their response was no less reasonable than your request.

Gee. even my selling dealership seems not to know this. I certainly haven't received anything.
Got a letter this week asking me to call for an appt for the 5000 K oil change.

The dealership I brought it into tried to charge me.

Just got my notice yesterday that the interval has been changed to 10k and that they will start using synthetic.

Not sure why this wasn't the case to begin with since this original post was so long ago.

I need to call my dealer because I was given coupons for 5/5k services or 2 years.

Wonder if they will now bump that up to 50k/4years. Won't make that much difference, years-wise, because I'll be up to 50k probably by year 2....

I just bought my new Gen III this month. It came with two 10k services with IIRC a 24 month time limit.

I just had my 5,000 mile service at the dealer. They did not do the oil change. They even gave me a print out saying that "I declined an oil change" which I did not do. I thought it was getting one. So I will have to wait until 10,000 miles for the first oil change.

If they're putting Toyota 0W-20 in the car, there is no reason to change it every 5k miles. You're using hi-quality synthetic, so changing at 5k is a complete waste of money. If they are changing it at 5k miles, they either are completely clueless and oblivious to the fact toyota has declared 10k OCIs for the priuses, or they are filling your car with dino oil, in which there is no 0W-20 dino oil. the closest is 5w-20.

in either case, every 2010 prius was factory filled with 0w-20, which is a synthetic.

Just picked up my 2010 V and the dealer told me about the 10k interval for synthetic oil. If you want to use regular oil the interval stays at 5k.

as mentioned in other replyies the warning light is still due to come on at 5k for tire rotation.

You aren't to ever use regular oil in a 2010 Prius regardless of 5K or 10K oil change. Sounds like confusion.

There are no 0W20 non-synthetic oils being marketed in the U.S. or possibly anywhere else for that matter. You are permitted to use 5W20 synthetic or non-synthetic but you have to change it at 5K vice 10K intervals for warranty purposes.

Does this mean the reminder has to be reset to go on every 10K miles instead of the 5K miles? If so, how do we change it to go on after 10K miles? Any ideas?

Toyota will not reprogram it to go off at 10K vs 5K or give us a way to turn it off completely. I just reset the thing as soon as it comes on.

Toyota's excuse is to tell you that you still have to do the rest of the maintenance at 5K intervals, i.e. rotate tires, look at the brakes, etc. That is of course ridiculous and would be a waste of money if you had the dealer do it, I just keep a maintenance record indicating that it was done by the owner.

Went in for my 5k service today under the free prepaid maintence we got when we purchased the car in June.

Dealer did the filter/oil change with 0w20 synthetic at no charge to me, even though the coupons book said that oil changes were only covered at 10k intervals.

Was very pleased with my dealership!

That's great, with so many complaints about poor dealer service it's nice to know there are a few good ones left.

Checked with 2 local dealers and the cost for just an oil change and filter with the 0w20 synthetic is $59. At that price you could change it every 5k miles if you figure to have it for 200k miles or so. Of course you have to be vigilant and stick to the toyota maintenance recommendations and not the jacked up dealer packages. When I picked up my 2010 on monday they specifically told me that the dealer service criteria were far more comprehensive [double the price?] than the factory recommendations. So nice to know they have my interests at heart. If I wanted to spend $400 for a service interval, I'd have bought a Mercedes.

Unfortunately they only allow 5W20 to be used if the 0W20 is unavailable, then it must be changed out in 5K miles and replaced with 0W20. So for purposes of the warranty I think we are stuck with the 0W20 which at this time is only available as a synthetic.

If your into DIY there is a good thread on that, it's pretty easy compared to some other cars I have owned.

Or one could try to find a good independent mechanic that would do it for less.

What I posted is for U.S. owners, even though your car is the same as ours your requirements may be slightly different. You should check your owner's manual and maintenance requirements to be sure. But I think if you are using 0W20 it should be 16000km no matter where you live.
