So I decided to drive my Crown Vic today to work. I just got back from home and I needed to go to Walmart, so I jumped in the Prius I turned it on and then all of a sudden when the engine started it was sharking pretty good like if the motor mounts went out. The whole motor was moving for about 10 sec and it went away. I turned it off and turned it back on and all normal. Now this morning was pretty cold today and cool during the day. Would some of you say that might be normal being that the car was not driving today and the engine was cold? No error codes, I scanned the car just now and all good.

Just bought the car about 3 weeks ago. So far I have replaced the spark plugs because there was a misfire cylinder 3 , car has 174k on it running on the original spark plugs. Also did a compression check and all 4 cylinder are good. No more engine code, while my mechanic was doing that I had him clean the whole EGR system and he cleaned the EGR valve as well. Now back to your question lol! I have not cleaned the intake manifold and the throttle bottle that is next on my list.

another gen 3 anomaly is, if you start the car and shut it down before it has fully warmed up (as in moving around from the garage to the street or something similar) the next time you start it, you can get the combustion you are experiencing

exactly, and don't shut the car down until the engine shuts down on its own

It's part of the hyrbid technology... Lol... They designed the intake manifold to help transition you from a gas car to electric... The Prius engine shutter of which you speak is quite common and makes people like the electric part of the car more than the engine part so your next car will be all electric.

But then Toyota fired the engineer who came up with the idea because didn't listen to 'em when they told 'em they don't have any plans to abandon gas engines. :)

Yeah it was pretty scary. It was shaking pretty bad almost like it was running on 3 spark plugs. But after about 10 sec it went away and car drove perfect.

What about an oil catch can;).

Sounds like you have some lights in the intake and the engine didn’t like it:cool:.

Clean the intake, change the PCV valve and install the catch can and you should be good to go(y).

That is next on my list, clean the intake manifold, replace pcv valve , clean throttle, catch can and take the car over to Firestone for a complete injection cleaning service.

Just remember the injection service helps meets the service centers boat payments ;).

Otherwise sounds like a great plan(y).

So I found this Toyota Bulletin on the forums... T-SB-0010-12. I called Toyota just to see if they are willing to replace and of course No. They said it would cost about $650 to do the repairs.

What is the work around this? Would it still be cleaning the Intake Manifold, replace the PCV Valve and installing the Oil Catch Can?

The PCV might even be fine, but with 174K and intake manifold off, why not.

Still, you missed one, and it's the biggy: the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system. Watch @NutzAboutBolts videos on that: he does two, one on just the pipe (a good first step, to see where you stand), and onother for the full system clean. The intake manifold is actually part of the EGR system too, btw: EGR gasses pass through the intake manifold, and the small passages at each intake port in particular are clog prone.

Yeah check the EGR pipe first, it's the low hanging fruit. I'd wager it's quite clogged with those miles.

see post #3. will all these things combined absolutely prevent the clash and clatter of a cold start after a cold start with early shutdown?

Well I sent him the video of what I exactly wanted him to do. But makes me think if the EGR pipe the smaller one if it was cleaned out? Hmmm, I will definitely check it out when I remove the manifold.

I hope it does, but not really because it did it last night. But I still need to do the rest of the work to actually see if it will stop doing it.
