I bought my Prius used, they only gave me one smart key. Do new ones come with 2 smart keys? Should the used dealer have given me a spare? I guess I'd be fine with paying $100 on ebay for one, but then I have to get it reprogrammed for another $50 at the dealer.

Also, what's with toyota charging $250 to update the firmware on the navigation? Is there a way around this?

My new Prius (new last year) came with 2 smart keys. I think you should press for another one.

I agree. The car definitely should come with two keys. If you bought it from a dealer, you should insist on it... if it was a private sale, try to negotiate with the guy to at least split the cost with you.

If you lose ALL of your keys (which in the OP's case for now, is just ONE), getting a new smart key will be considerably more expensive since I believe they need to replace certain computers. (?)

Definitely push for the second key...

I just called and he said he would look, but that 'probably not since we would have given you it that day.'
I don't know, we'll see. They also didn't fill it up with gas when I left the lot! I didn't ask them to do it, but i;m assuming most dealers fill up the tank before you leave, right?

You might be able to get a disc on eBay, but make sure it's for your year. There's a different version for '04-'05 and '06+.

The used dealer's only going to be able to give you what they got. You could have always tried to negotiate for one but after the fact? Good luck.

I purchased both of my Prius's used from two different dealers on ebay. Neither of the two had both keys even though Toyota sells each car with two keys. One dealer sold the car full of gas the other with the low fuel warning illuminated (no class). Whatever you do don't purchase a used smart key or the programming instructions. They won't work. You must get a new, never been programed key, and have your Toyota dealer program it for you. Good luck! :)

Considering the cost of smart keys, it wouldn't surprise me if certain unscrupulous used car dealers intentionally hold back the second key to sell it off afterward and make a few extra bucks. <_<

Especially a place that doesn't even give you a full tank of gas!

Is the question REALLY about firmware update or NAV DVD update (newer version)? Not the same thing. As to why they charge so much for the updated DVDs, I have no idea. At the price they want, and with NO knowledge of WHAT was updated, not too many people are likely to upgrade. List WHAT changed, at least a reasonable description of the geographical area, AND charge $50 and I'll bet they would sell enough more to make WAY more money than they do now.
