In the end the thing that fixed my startup knock, P0300 and P0301 codes was.....wait for it.....,a new EGR valve for $149 on ebay. No kidding. Problem solved. spark plugs, ign coil, cleaning egr cooler, cleaning intake manifold, all didn't matter. I tried dismantiling the spinning actuator and checking for problems. The piston moved freely, and the vallve and piper were clean. But replacing it fixed the problem. Codes did not lead to recognizing the problem. And I did not replace the intake plenum.

    Glad to hear.

When I "cleaned" the EGR valve on my TDI, it didn't clear code either. The fault was in the solenoid. That was the final straw why I did the delete mod....that and a bad cooler valve, the cooler was clogged and both air pipes leaked. Not to rial up any save the planet members here, but the the whole EGR "smog" system is bad for engines...VW, Toyota...all of them.

IMG_0426.JPG Read the posts! clean up the EGR system and route a longer pvc hose into a can of some sort. Doesn't have to be fancy expensive like some posts running into major bucks for looks. Seems some turn the OCC can into a WOW thing, just a couple of hoses and a make shift container. I used an recycled brake resovoir from junkyard and hoses to boot. $10 Clean the intake manifold really good. Do the research and get to know your enemy!
