    "Jackals" sounds better. Misunderstood "carrion".

These are nice and quiet too. Or at least they can be, if you don't open the dump valve too fast.

ironically these thefts may help keep the cars around- if there is a spike in demand for spare parts, the database algorithms of the world will (probably) notice and make sure there are even more spare parts available in the future.

My cat has just been stolen from my 2008 Prius parked in Kennington, SE London. The neighbours didn't notice anything. When I had it towed to the local garage this morning they said they'd just had another 2008 Prius locally with exactly the same thing in the previous week. The insurance company said there's been a sudden spike in calls for this exact thing in London, with reports of cars parked in NCP car parks having their cats stolen in the middle of the day. I've made a report to the police so hopefully they'll actually be able to do something since it seems like it's not a one-off occurrence. Fortunately the insurance company is paying for it to be repaired. Maybe the garage can weld the cat onto the floor pan or something for me...

No need to make something up. They have been making cat anti theft devices for many years. Here is one that fits the Prius.

What are insurance rates like? If owners en-masse insurance-up, and the thefts continue, the insurance companies will complain, hue-and-cry will prevail. Tally ho!

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been a victim too. My Prius was a victim to what surely must be the same gang in Bermondsey. They’re carrying out their crime spree with unbridled impunity while our law enforcers sit twiddling their thumbs and cynically issuing crime numbers instead of tackling this dystopian malaise.

The insurance linked garage where my 2008 Prius Tspirit is awaiting the arrival of parts for repair have informed me that there are another 5 x 2nd generation Prius Hybrids awaiting repairs for the same Catalytic Converter crime.

That’s just ONE garage! There must be scores of Prii being hit in the last few weeks!!!

    I feel your pain!

Still, how effective is it? I guess if one vehicle has that, and another does not... But if there's room beyond the cables to put a snipper, and/or the cage can be pushed right/left a bit.

That cable is very hard to cut and goes thru the frame. You could still cut the cat but you better pack a lunch to cut that cable.

I wonder if you would get a reduction in your car insurance if you used one of those?

It would be nice to see a picture of one properly installed on a 2nd Gen Prius. I can see the logic behind this kind of protection - the question is - how effective will it be in the long run? Can they still get it off in 20 minutes?
Will it rattle relentlessly under your normally quiet Prius?
Can thieves just cut one end beyond the CAT, and just unbolt the CAT at the manifold end, then walk off with it STILL encased in the cat protector?
These desperados will always find another deviously nasty way to get what they want.....

In the pic above it looks like the right end of the cable is looping around an axle. This, coupled with the stiffness of the cable, will I think make it very difficult to shift the cage in any direction. They can still cut it, but they have to cut out an increasingly long piece, it might be more difficult, and if every second counts, maybe they move on. Also, if they're on foot, they likely want an item short enough for a packsack or gym bag.

Hi there! It looks like you are trying to quickly and surreptitiously remove a catalytic converter protected with some bits of metal wire! Can I help?

    ...oh! Actually I can't!

You'll need one of these, capable of nipping through half-inch extra high strength steel guy wire in about three seconds per cut. Really, watch the video and see for yourself!

    You're welcome!

To be honest, I like the wire rope cage idea. The problem is that it is already out of date- it's now easy to get quick, quiet electric cutters that can snip right through the gauge of cable they've used.

Heavier wire rope would be a valid defense, at least for a while... but at a certain point it's too thick to work with for its original purpose of making a cage.
