Hi all, I posted here earlier when my cat and lambda was stolen back in February 2019. Cat was replaced with aftermarket one and denso lambda.

All was fine, but then after about 1000 miles check engine error popped up with code p0606 it comes and then turns off randomly about twice a week. I tried replacing lambda with no success. It goes like this for a few months now, average consumption is about 50-55mpg.

Did anyone face this problem? Thanks in advance

Morning all, reporting a cat theft from Southampton, Hampshire. Middle of the night. I think I saw them speed off in a black estate car. Prius was parked on drive. Can anyone please recommend and link to an OEM part please. Insurer already limbering up to say car is not economically repairable so I'm looking at doing the job myself and would appreciate a pointer of which parts to get.

What year is the car I am guessing your looking at approx £300/400 depending on how much damage is done if they cut the cables and also may need a new sensor

Terribly sorry to hear about the loss of your catalytic converter - stolen by yet another act of Grand Theft Catalyser.
    In Southampton, no less......

When you get a chance, follow this thread from scratch and you’ll understand how frustrated we all are by this continuing dastardly crime!

    Meanwhile, in answer to your question, may I recommend The KLARIUS Catalytic Converter as a viable replacement for your stolen OEM cat. This IS aftermarket but is very well designed and does the job properly. This was installed for me by my insurance company after mine got pilfered during a rare visit to south London - while I was at a funeral. Not a good day.........but I digress;

The Klarius replacement Catalytic Converter I have works EXTREMELY well. It’s cheap compared to the OEM and does the job just as well.

I’ve managed to reach over 600 miles out of a tank of fuel twice this summer using this cat, and with up to 65.7mpg on the screen.

Just filled up this morning and the 15 miles from the petrol station to work produced 71.2mpg - and that was just cruising round a portion of the A406 North Circular using the cruise control (average speed cam zones for half of the journey).

I’ve had mine since December 2018 and NO COMPLAINTS! No error codes, my MPG went UP not DOWN....

So, a Klarius Catalytic Converter if you please!

    * No, I don’t work for them!!! Just telling it like it is .

p.s. I will admit to having gone to Toyota to buy original Toyota exhaust gaskets as I wasn’t sure what else was out there - though the gaskets installed by insurance worked fine, I replaced them when I was having a custom built cage installed around my catalyser clusters just to disuade “Light Fingered Loonies” from trying to steal my now worthless to them cat.

I’d advise you get a high quality Lambda sensor too.

    Good luck!

Many thanks for the info. If the insurer doesn't come through, then I will look at getting this and fixing it myself. Any recommendation for a Lambda sensor? There seems to be quite a range.

Yes they do also target the Gen 3 Prius (2010 onwards)!!! I have a 2010 Gen 3 Prius TSpirit and I found out the hard way this afternoon (01/08/2019). Parked my car in the Islington area in London for two hours and returned to find my car started up sounding like a tractor. Looked beneath the motor and found the heat-shield had been ripped open and was dangling down and the Lambda Sensor was cut off too. I’m officially stranded without my beloved Prius!
Furthermore, closer inspection revealed that the catylic converter had indeed been cut off and stolen by some foolish miscreant of society!!!

That’s crazy considering the new cats have ceramic catalytic with thin coating of the expensive metals so not really worth that much in scrap.

I had an Uber driver say he had a gen3 I think 2011 plate cat stolen and Jemca would take three to four weeks to get the part and currently there is no after market replacement available. Hopefully they can sort your one out quicker it was quoted in the region of £2000 cos of the amount of damage done.

    Hang on a moment!

Are you trying to tell me the internal matrix of the 3rd Generation Prius Catalytic Converter IS NOT similar to the Gen 2’s - as in, it DOES indeed have a ceramic matrix coated in the rare metals required for catalyst capability?

AS IN, IT IS NOT WORTH DIDDLY SQUAT TO THESE THIEVES....?!!!

Oh the damage and undeserved disruption to Gen 3 owners attacked in this manner!

    Infinitely depressing.....

Had my 2010 Prius Gen 3 cat stolen on Friday morning in SE London. Incredibly bad timing as I need it the next couple of weeks for holidays. £2K to fix from Toyota but insurance want to write it off. Less than 40k mileage so I'm tempted to take a cash payment from insurance and get it fixed out of that. I'm not sure they will give me quite enough money to buy another. I guess it would be reclassified as a Gen N. Anybody any ideas on the wisdom of this?

    Hello All,

I had my Prius gen 2(2008,104k on the clock) catalytic converter stolen as well. I am thinking of either getting it fixed and adding an additional alarm with a tilt sensor. I am thinking of getting a Klarius catalytic converter installed. The doubt I have is whether I should get the catloc installed as well - do the thieves know that the car has an after market catalytic converter or would they try cutting through *any* converter.

I am hoping an aftermarket catalytic converter+catloc+ new alarm with tilt sensor will serve as a deterrent. Any thoughts appreciated.

Alternatively, I could get it fixed up and then sell it and get a non toyota plug-in hybrid. I really cannot risk getting the thing stolen again - it is just too traumatising an experience for me and my family.

    Thanks,
    George.

Sorry to hear about the theft of your catalytic converter.
Take the money and get it fixed privately.
Insurance are being greedy and taking the easy way out - they stand to benefit financially from writing off your 40k mileage car off. B’stards!

My 2008 2nd Gen Prius was similarly attacked last November. Despite having about 110k on the clock, they fixed it. And I also got a courtesy car for almost 2 weeks - the very next day after the theft.
That was Tesco Insurance by the way. They did me proud.

I’m appalled that your insurance company are pulling a fast one on you instead of fixing your Prius with only 40k on the clock.

Take the cash, buy it back off them if need be and get it repaired. Also budget for extra security to prevent a recurrence theft.

    Good luck!

p.s. I hope you reported the theft to the Police - even IF they’re gonna do nothing about it

Thanks for the info. That's really interesting to know. I have indeed reported to the police, but yes, I doubt they will have anything to do with it. I might be being naive, but how do insurance stand to benefit from writing it off?

On the phone they said they'd off me cash minus the scrap value if I wanted to keep it. Anybody have an idea of scrap value of Gen 3 Prius?

I guess I'd want an OEM part so I could fit a catloc, hoping to go to a toyota independent specialist if I go ahead with it.

Sorry to hear about your troubles DD, at least you got yours back up and running. I was shocked when I said they wanted to write mine off.

Insurance will write it off as I wrote earlier Toyota does not at the moment have spare catalytic convertors for gen3 you can get this confirmed by your local spare shops too they won’t be able to get after market parts like you can for gen 2.

You could ring around different dealers if they are able to source it quicker then you maybe lucky. This is based on Jemca dealer.

Your other option is to get cat from scrap merchants and try that if you got the time and effort to do that.

just found out that my wifes grandfather had his Gen 2 Prius stolen back in June, the Cat was stolen and I updated this thread, however since they've resorted to stealing the actual car itself, from East Dulwich, South London. When I speak to him next I'll see how they managed to steal the car, as I'm intrigued now.

As for mine, it was parked in Long Stay at Gatwick Airport Valet parking after a trip to the States to see Mickey Mouse and his chums, and the cat is still intact upon arrival home this morning. My youngest daughter was so happy to see the car she wanted to kiss it, however the bird mess and cobwebs on the car meant she never had the chance to!

is it time to get a lexus?

TBH hybrids are looking increasingly overpriced given that new diesel cars are very clean and diesel is also quite good mpg

a 2012 prius is about the same price as a 2015 VW golf.
