So on 09/18/17, our car was stolen. And last night, 09/30/17, it was found no where near our home and clearly banged up. I won't inundate this post with pictures, but here's some overview shots. The backside on the drivers side looks pretty beat up underneath as well. It's a 2016 Three Touring (I believe) with all the tech options and leather, etc. so a wee bit concerned about the crack on the emblem. The regular battery was taken so it wasn't drivable never mind the missing glass. They smoked in her too :( Does insurance even cover removal of smoke smell that's nasty? We treated our Prius (aka Betty White) with kid gloves.

It's been an incredibly long 12 days and onward to another journey... whatever that is... who knows.

Pretty heartbroken. Concerned about our insurance rates (we have USAA). We have gap insurance on the note and low deductibles, so we are good in that regard.

They won't repair it if it's totalled. So it's in your hands until the adjuster sees it

If the thieves keyed the entire car, cut up the electrical wires while stealing the battery, steal some electronics, they would probably consider the car totaled

Oh, I know. I'm just emotionally spent. It's been such a long, long 2 weeks.
I wish there was some magic ball that would tell me the outcome.
I just want this chapter over with, you know? :(

    I edited my response

A car is never the same after it's been repaired

Ugh, I know. That's probably one of my biggest fears.

How did they steal it? Keys left in car?

No, it won't let me leave keys in the car as it sounds a constant beep if I do. And I live in Chicago and street park.
If I knew how they stole it, I probably would have found it earlier.

Scary. I've heard of thieves using amplifiers to boost the signal of the keys to your car. But street parking......right outside your house or a block away?

If you don't live in Chicago or are familiar with Chicago parking, it's difficult to explain... it's wherever you can find a spot nearest to your home. It's fair game, not assigned. We live in a permit zone so only those with that permit can street park after 6pm. We were parked close to where we could eyeball it on my way to work on my bike but we could not see it from our home.

If you can't see it from your house, I would think an amplifier wouldn't work. Even scarier now......unless it was towed.

I never thought that a Prius was worth stealing to anyone else. They don't inspire that bad boy car driving thang. I'm so sorry for your loss. It does look like they were going after specific parts.

I'm so sorry to see what happened to your beautiful Prius, and I hope everything goes the best possible way for you. Dealing with insurance companies is never fun, but USAA is supposed to be pretty good (based on the videos I saw where I used to work).

For those of you who are curious about Chicago neighborhood permit parking, see Residential Zone Parking FAQs | City Clerk of Chicago

In dense environments, I wouldn't be so confident about that.

    Condolences.
I almost hope that they total it for your sake, especially since it's going to be you against your insurance company.

    If they do not........
You'll need to be FIRM with your insurance company. Fortunately (and thanks for whomever served!) you have USAA and they have good street cred for actually helping the customer.

There's a process for un butt-heading (removing smoker smell) from the interior, and you'll want this done.
This will also be a rare case for taking the car to an actual Toyota dealership for repair....something that I'm usually NEVER wont to recommend.
A Yota dealership is more likely to be able to mend any of the broken electronics and replace OEM bits with new OEM bits......although you will want to be very "hands-on" in ensuring that they complete repairs with NEW, OEM parts.
The GM an the FORD used to provide lifetime warranties for replaced OEM parts, and you will want to determine whether or not any form of repair guarantee applies to the replacement parts.

There's also a matrix of recommendations that will apply if your car is totaled......so you will want to let us know.
If you're a parent or know a parent, you will want to channel some of that energy into being an advocate for ensuring that your insurance company and those that repair your car do the right thing!!!
You have a decent insurance company.....at least.

    Best of luck!

Any valet parking recently? I wonder if the parking attendant could have made a copy. They would have to have done the chicken dance or had special equipment. Obviously an unscrupulous employee at the dealer could as well. I'm reaching of course.

If insurance doesn't total it make sure you change the oil.

Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah I don't like how anyone that has access to your car can duplicate keys on a prius, in a few minutes

    Thanks.

I'm unclear what you mean by "firm" but I regress.
In some respects it looks like a lot of damage, in other respects... not so much.

I never do valet. If somewhere I am going requires valet, I'll just take an Uber/Lyft.

$11,141.27 is the estimated cost of repairs.

They are repairing it, not totaling it.

I don't know how to feel.
