I went to a hood muffler shop today just to look and ask about putting an exhaust on my Prius C. I had read that the Fiat 500 abarth doesn't have a muffler. It sounds good and not too loud because the engine is so small. So I asked the mechanic if it's possible to do this on the Prius and he said yes. While I was there's they were doing just that to a BMW X5 and to an Accord. What problems can it cause on the car??? Will it still work properly??? Any warning lights gonna go off??? What could go wrong???

Do you have mandatory emissions or safety inspections where you live ??
If so, that might end up being a costly mistake.

And the Prius has an engine that is a bit different.
I've only seen a couple with modified exhausts and both sounded like a sick lawn mower.

Aren't you supposed to give up on stuff like this once you're out of your twenties? ;)

    1) It will be louder and annoy your neighbors.

    Con
    1) Fuel Economy will suffer
    2) Power will suffer
    3) The noise will be really inconsistent as the engine turns off frequently.
    4) Putting it all back to pass inspection will be expensive. Really expensive if you don't keep all the stock parts. (you can't certify an aftermarket Cat in NYS.

How come fuel economy will suffer???

Florida plates, no inspection. And if I needed a NYS inspection, I know people, lol. I also ride scooters. I look like a circus bear on it. So I like doing ridiculous things. I'm worried about making the engine less reliable or things not working right because of this.

This is not an Otto cycle engine. The compression ratio is about 8 to 1, while the expansion ratio is about 13 to 1, so little more expansion happens outside the cylinder. So a straight pipe is just about noise.

A straight pipe will have no oxygen sensors, so the electronics will have no way to tune engine for perfect fuel to air ratio. (called closed loop) The electronics will used a preprogammed table to guess the perfect fuel air ratio and so reduce both economy and performance. (Open loop, in worst case called Limp Home mode)

    Open/Closed Loop Operation

(This page is going to use Tuned Port Injection as TPI with defining it)

The oxygen sensors are in the muffler??? What I saw the guys are the shop doing is cutting the pipe right before the muffler, then welding in a piece that is the about same length as the muffler was and welding a tip on it.

Yeah, a muffler delete. The Fiat 500 Abarth comes from the factory without a muffler. It still has all the emission hardware. That's how I had the idea. I read that the engine is so small on the Abarth so it doesn't make too much noise and get a pass from the governmemt without a muffler. I was thinking that the C wouldn't be too loud because of the same reason. I'm worried that it will have negative effects on the engine because it's not an Otto cycle engine so it's different.

If you are leaving the pollution controls in place, getting keyed by angry neighbors is your main worry.

    Pro loud exhaust
    Con loud exhaust

I would think the exhaust note would just sound weird on a CVT drivetrain as the drone would be even more pronounced.

I ride scooters and I'm used to what a CVT sounds like. I think it's gonna be weird is the on and off when going from electric to combustion. It's gonna make it easier to stay in electric mode on local streets

How would this work on a Prius that doesn't have an alternator?

So tried this last night.. the free version does not include OBD2 functionality. Found the paid version online and tried it... apparently it doesn't like most OBD2 adapters and could not find mine either. From the reviews online, this app is not well applauded and I'm glad I didn't spend money on it.
